Igor Burtsev, head of the International Centre of Hominology, is the man who initiated the media frenzy by prematurely "leaking" the study to the public. Dr. Burtsev is also the same man who announced the non-publication of Dr. Melba Ketchum's Bigfoot DNA study.
"Re the paper: the reviewed journals in the US refused to publish the paper. That is why Dr Ketchum has sent it to me to arrange publishing in any Russian reviewd journal. And I showed to our genetisits and understood that it was a serious work. I gave it up to the journal, now it's under reviewing." --Igor Burtsev
UPDATE: Robin Lynn. Dr. Melba Ketchum's spokesperson reacted to Dr. Burtsev's remarks and seems to slightly contradict them:

This is why Dr. Melba Ketchum's execution and communication had to be flawless, it had to be held to a higher standard--there were too many expectations and too many personal efforts on the line. In our opinion, if Dr. Melba Ketchum had realized this project was bigger than herself, the outcome would have closer to the one we had hoped for.
Unfortunately it is Not Over.

The problem is that some people absolutize the science. Unfortunately science now is too conservative. One third of the population of the USA believes in BFs existing, but academic science even does not want to recognize the problem of their existing or not, just rejecting to dicuss [sic] this question. In such a condition this subject is under discussion of the broad public. We can't wait decades when scientists start to study this problem, forest people need to be protect now, not after half a sentury [sic], when science wakes up.
Fortunately it is Not Over
There is another camp that is trying to do Bigfoot DNA research. It is the Oxford-Lausanne Collateral Hominid Project headed by Bryan Sykes (read: Everything You Didn't Know About the Bryan Sykes' Bigfoot DNA Research ).
The Oxford-Lausanne/Sykes project is taking a different approach, instead of hinging the research on a peer-reviewed paper, the results will be distributed in multiple formats. According to Rhettman Mullis, founder of Bigfootology, "do not forget that Sykes is also turning this project into a book and the BBC have stated they are going to film a three hour documentary (one hour segments) on the Sykes' project."
Ketchum is claiming the paper is still in review.
ReplyDeleteWe updated and mentioned that fairly quickly; before you posted your comment. We have Robin Lynn's remarks that seem to slightly contradict Igor's. Ketchum also said it would be weeks on NOV 26th (the fifth time she has postponed the publication).
DeleteYour tone confuses me. She is, like it or not, the most credible piece on the board right now (for the media, scientific establishment, and general public alike). Unlike footprints and photographs, DNA can't be spoofed. When she finally goes down, it will be all that much more harder for another study to be taken seriously. Prepare for another 30 years of obscurity, dominated by fringe elements and conspiracy theorists. Alas, her own association with known fruitcakes probably doomed her from the start.
ReplyDeleteyou are not very well versed in the availability of information if you feel that Ketchum's study is the most credible study... apparently an email saying you have DNA is enough for Ketchum supporters.. they are the fruitcakes you speak of.

DeleteWe have no firm proof of any of her research except hers and a few reviewers. She will not get any credibility until an expert has sat down with her and reviewed her work to include protocols/methods and analysis/interpretation. Until then it's all announcements and words, no proof. My best,
ReplyDeleteSykes will finish before or at the same time, his international renown will speak for itself when the time comes. I even hear the skeptics speak more respectfully of him (vs. Ketchum).
ReplyDeleteSykes has also recently 'aped' (please pardon the pun) Ketchum by saying that the studies and review will take time. Sykes involvement is a shot across the the bows of the Ketchum project as their samples could well be duplicate or similar. Common sense dictates that both studies should yield the same results.....

Important to remember that neither study will "prove" the existence of bigfoot, only type specimens will gain this critter entry into the taxonomic book of life. That is not to diminish the importance of these studies(Sykes' especially), they will certainly add a compelling push to the ongoing investigation and hopefully produce an influx of both interest and money from the greater community that will ultimately elevate bigfoot from that of a very vague possibility to that of a very real presence . . . ReplyDeleteWill people PLEASE stop calling Igor a freaking DR. He gave himself that title, he didn't earn it. He also believed that hillbilly lady who says they borrow garlic and talk to her. The second that clown was associated with this is the second everyone should have walked away. Science is absolutized…. Of course it is. That way people like him will be laughed out of the room and the people who went to school to earn a Dr degree can be in charge. This is only going to get worse and you idiots who buy into every damn thing that comes out are going to make excuse after excuse. Ketchum=fail!!!!

If there is smoke, it's prudent to investigate, to see if there is a fire.
ReplyDeleteScience makes many discoveries - often by accident - that way. But science is making a fool of itself, by ignoring witness statements. Why is anecdotal such a dirty word? There are many things known to natives living in the jungle, that science has to test before accepting native wisdom. Rejecting witness statements out of hand is insulting all those witnesses, who show a level of bravery that would be creditable in a scientist.
Also, with regard to detecting the claimed animals; most scientists are ill-equipped to deal with the sophistication required to observe them. It takes embedded expert knowledge you don't find in a lab, or behind a desk - however clever you are!
