CNN Psychoanalyzes Bigfooters

Why do we believe in Bigfoot? The same reason we enjoy amusement rides, its a safe fear. So goes the CNN report. Below are a few choice excerpts
...Believing in these creatures and following their trails in the forest is somewhat akin to an amusement park ride: They are safe ways of experiencing fear, said Jacqueline Woolley, professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin.

People are still searching for evidence of Scotland's Loch Ness Monster, said to have first been spotted by Vikings in the sixth century. There have also been reported sightings of mermaids -- in Israel last year, for one -- and ghosts: For instance, there are still believers in La Llorona, "the crying woman" said to have killed the children she had with Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés.

Other cultures also have legendary folk monsters that have supposedly been sighted but haven't been proved to exist. The "chupacabra," roughly translated as "goat sucker" in Spanish, has been blamed for the deaths of goats in Mexico. The blood-drinking creature is said to look like a cross between a giant dog and a lizard, and it has fiery eyes. A coyote-like creature in Blanco, Texas, created a frenzy last year as some speculated it could be a chupacabra.

Humans are inherently interested in the blurred line between fantasy and reality, psychologists say. People also want to feel like heroes; stories such as David and Goliath help people see themselves as capable of tackling their own challenges, even if their "monster" happens to be their boss or in-law, she said.

Serious scientists have studied the evidence that hunters of Bigfoot and others collect but have never made a shocking discovery based upon them.

Disotell has conducted DNA analyses of more than 15 samples over the years of blood, feces, bone, hair and other remnants of supposed chupacabra or Bigfoot-like creatures. His samples have come from various places in the United States, Canada and as far as Nepal, where the Abominable Snowman or Yeti is said to reside.

"It stretches credibility just from the sense that you can't just have one or two of these beasts running around for tens of thousands of years; you need a population to be viable," he said.

The "evidence" he has examined was, in reality, material from bears, coyotes, humans, mountain goats, and inorganic sources. He ran analyses of their DNA with the same rigor as any other samples in his lab, which routinely does such tests to help classify species of primates from all over the world...

Sasquatch Phonetic Alphabet Documents

One of the most impressive presentations at the Oregon Sasquatch Symposium was R. Scott Nelson's breakdown of the sasquatch language recorded on the what is formally known as the Berry Tapes, but we all are familiar with the name Sierra Sounds.

For those who do not know Scott Nelson, Nelson worked for the Navy intelligence specializing in crypto-linquistics the science of decoding and transcribing hidden language. He specialized in Russian and Spanish. Bottom line he know his business.

For the first time during a presentation Nelson mentioned cognates. Cognates in linguistics are words that have a common etymological origin.
Examples of cognates in Indo-European languages are the words night (English), nuit (French), Nacht (German), nacht (Dutch), nicht (Scots), natt (Swedish, Norwegian), nat (Danish), raat (Urdu), nátt (Faroese), nótt (Icelandic), noc (Czech, Slovak, Polish), ночь, noch (Russian), ноќ, noć (Macedonian), нощ, nosht (Bulgarian), ніч, nich (Ukrainian), ноч, noch/noč (Belarusian), noć (Croatian), ноћ/noć (Serbian), νύξ, nyx (Ancient Greek, νύχτα/nyhta in Modern Greek), nox (Latin), nakt- (Sanskrit), natë (Albanian), noche (Spanish), nos (Welsh), nueche (Asturian), noite (Portuguese and Galician), notte (Italian), nit (Catalan), noapte (Romanian), nakts (Latvian) and naktis (Lithuanian), all meaning "night" and derived from the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) *nókʷts, "night".
--src: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognate

Sasquatch cognates include: Me, I, you, no, yaw, how, and food.

He summarized with these conclusions:
1. DEFINITELY NOT HUMAN
Due to hours of listening and beyond human abilty to make. The tempo is too fast and the conversation too quick almost twice as fast as humans

2. DEFINITELY DETECTED LANGUAGE
Isolated 41 different phonemes combined to make morphemems (syllables). There were emoted sounds of intimidation and negation. Too many grammatical keys to be random.

3. TAPES/RECORDINGS NOT FAKE
No deception took place. This guy was trained how to detect the latest Russian deception technology. A faked recording back in 1974 would have been easy to detect.

Exclusively at the Oregon Sasquatch Symposium he handed out hard copies of a formalization of the Sasquatch Phonetic Alphabet and a Sample Transcription of the Berry Tape I. Download both documents at the link below.

OSS Hermon Joyner of BLC Wins Big

As a final surprise. Under one of the seart was a special prize for
lucky guest recieved the Sasquatch Garden Yeti. Congratulations Hermon.

OSS Dr Meldrum talks Asian Bigfoot

A new documentary coming out next month will include Meldrums work on
the Vietnamese version of Bigfoot

Người Rừngs ("forest man") is a creature said to inhabit Vietnam, reputedly similar to the bigfoot, sometimes also known as "forest people". It is described as being approximately six feet tall and covered with hair except in the knees, the soles of the feet, the hands, and the face. The hair ranges in color from gray to brown to black. The creature walks on two legs and has been reported both solitary and moving in small groups. The creature is most often sighted foraging for food from fruits and leaves to langers and even flying foxes.

Two Người Rừngs were reportedly captured by tribesmen near Dak Lak Province in 1971. In 1974 a North Vietnamese general, Hoang Minh Thao, requested an expedition to find evidence of the creatures, but it was unsuccessful.[1]

Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman believes that the Nguoi Rung are a surviving population of Homo erectus or Neanderthal.[2]

Professor Tran Hong Viet is a researcher of Người Rừng who in 1982 claimed to have located a footprint measuring 28x16cm.

Check out the Người Rừng on Bigfoot Lunch Club's International AKA Bigfoot map below.

View AKA Bigfoot World Map in a larger map

OSS Jaime Avalos: Ducks and Tightropes

Jaime Avalos of Sierrasasquatch.com also mentions sasquatch tracks
often are in line as if walking on an invisible tightrope yet the toes
are pointed outward like a duck.

OSS Jaime Avalos talks about his unique approach

In full field research Gera Jaime Avalos has a unique technique
towards looking for Bigfoot.

Tecniques include:
Fasting
Awareness
Sound discipline - he travels alone.
Light discipline - flahlight for emergency only
Movement discipline - patiently waiting for encounters
Blending into environment - dark clothing
No guns
No wood knocking
No call blasting
Submissive behavior

All in all Jaime's approach seems to be FULLY prepared and creating
the best opportunity for Sasquatch to encounter him.

Among other elements, Jaime seems to also take an experimental
approach. Constantly trying different casting formulas and methods to
hide the scent of his food.

OSS Sasquatch Phonetic Alphabet Formalized

You can hear a pin drop for the first time at the symposium. As Scott
Nelson reveals formal standard procedures for documenting Bigfoot
Language.

He has two documents that will be provided to all guest and we will
repost or add links to these documents before the end of the day.

The silent awe of the crowd here speaks to how momentous this
presentation here.

*** CHECK OUT!!! our update with downloadable documents here!

OSS Scott Nelson a retired naval cryptolinguist reveals Bigfoot language

Using Transcribe! An official transcription software. First and
foremost a lesson on crypto linguistics, a fascinating science. Nelson
explains not only the communication between Sasquatch, but specific
cognates used by them like no, I, and me.

Revealed also are conversational behaviors, like verbal punctiations
used by Sasquatch to indicate when they are finished speaking.

Through isolated audio loops we hear other morpemed that indicate
other cognates like "food."

One loop is a remarkable pigeon, a primitive language syntax, for, "me
watch food, me play food"

OSS Jeff Meldrum Spends a few mins about Gigantopithicas

Due to temporary presentation issues with Jaime Avalos. Dr Meldrum
speaks to some of the comments made about Giganto earlier.

He explains the only reason we do have any fossils of gigantopithicas
is due to scavenger porcupines carrying the bones back to the caves.
If not for them we may not even have the mandibles and teeth as
evidence.

He continues to explain how plenty of information can be learned just
by having only teeth as evidence. Incisor comparison alone reveals a
diet similar to modern day chimps.

OSS what's on store for tomorrow

Tomorrow at the Oregon Sasquatch Syposium is the most anticipated by
the Bigfoot Lunch Club.

It's starting with Jaime Avalos of sierrasasquatch.net. He will
presenting in full gear. His field research process is probably the
most streamlined when compared to most field researchers. He's a one
man traveling science lab.

Then Ron Morehead of the Sierra Sounds fame ( the standard for Bigfoot
audio recording) will be presenting.

Following Moorehead is appropriately Scott Nelson (pictured standing
in the middle). Scott was a linguist for the navy. He will be
revealling some fascinating breakthroughs in bigfoot language
including cognates (words that are the same in multiple languages)

And of course, the grand finale will be Dr. Jeff Meldrum. A professor
and eloquent speaker, Meldrum alone is capable of bringing credibility
to the pursuit of Sasquatch.

Stay tuned fans, as we continue our live blog of the Oregon Sasquatch
Symposium.

In the picture (left to right) is Hermon Joyner, BLC contributer;
Scott Nelson, linguist and discoverer of Bigfoot language; and Guy
Edwards, BLC artist/graphic designer.

See you tomorrow fans!

OSS Dr Meldrum and Jaime Avalos Teach Casting

Using his own footprint Dr Jeff Meldrum Teams up with Jaime Avalos of sierrasasquatch.net
to teach casting best practices.

Some tips include prepping the footprint with a high laquer hairspray.

Another tip included NOT use plaster of paris, as it is too chalky.
Today Jaime used magic stone he buys regularly at Michaels Craft store.

The final cast of Dr Meldrums cast will be auctioned off at the Oregon
Sasquatch Symposium.

OSS Kathy Moskowitz Strain

800 yr old Hairymam Pictograph is the topic of Kathy's presentation.

Her focus is the ancient oral traditions regarding Bigfoot. Her belief
we can learn the most from the natives who have had the greatest
opportunity for exposure to Sasquatch.

Consistant beliefs across north America native traditions.

Bigger than humans
Hair covered
Walks upright
And...
Cannabalistic, which draws the conclusion that native Americans felt
that Sasquatch was more human than animal.

Many oral traditions recall huge wars against Tribes of Bigfoot (a
possible reason for smaller modern populations of Bigfoot).

OSS Thom Powell convinced by Leonard Nimoy

As an 8thgrade science teacher, Thom was convinced Bigfoot was pseudo
science. While using "In Search Of" hosted by Leonard Nimoy to
introduce science, or lack there of, to his students.

Upon reviewing the episode he realized the evidence was actually
compelling.

Thom is one of the first to incorporate habituations, infrasound, and
giving credence to temporary abductions.

More recently his research has been leaning towards the paranormal,
and recommends researchers should not turn away from the more
paranormal aspects.

His presentation also included how to write a Bigfoot book.

He recommends "The Mothman Prophesies" as a good example of where
Bigfoot research should go. Also recommended was, "The Sense of Being
Stated At."

OSS Silverstar close up

Below is the Photo Cliff Barachman used to determine size of
Silverstar sasquatch. Upon doing some math he derived the VISIBLE
hightower to be just above 5 ft. Using Patty as a guide he determine
the Sasquatch to be 7'8" in total.

OSS Cliff Barackman talks about Silverstar Photographs

Randee Chase on Nov 17 2005 saw what he thought was a rock, once the
rock moved he thought it was a man.

It was not until friends pursuaded Randee that it may be a Bigfoot.

Images of the silverstar photos to follow.

OSS David Rodriguez AKA Multiple Encounters

D.Rodriguez AKA Multiple Encounters, has had three major encounters
with Bigfoot. He has been face to face and engaged by Sasquatch.
His topic is Tree Breaks, considered a common tell-tale sign by
bigfooters. A thought-provoking presentation that cautions us to know
how snow loading can also look like tree breaks.

OSS: Bob Gimlin does impromptu talk

Bob Gimlin recalls the first time he heard "Patty," the moniker given
to the bigfoot in famous Patterson/Gimlin film, he was anaware the
community had already given it a name.

He met Patterson as a rodeo peer. Patterson would continually show him
castings and recorded interviews to the unimpressed Gimlin.

It wasn't until Gimlin read Ivan Sanderson's book (provided by
Patterson) when Gimlin's curiousity peaked.

OSS A.Williams Presents a picture of Enochs "brother"

Autumn Williams takes a shot and rendering a Photoshop illustration of
Enoch. Witness Mike says, "Not bad, that could be Enoch's brother."

Eugene is Kickin off Sasquatch

Just passed by Toby, Dr. Meldrum and Bob Gimlin. Waiting for Cliff
Barackman. Already hearing buzzes about "best video ever," and "never
seen anything like it!"

There's a lot of old squatchin' freinds bumping into each other.
Although a newbie, I can't help but feel nostalgic amongst these folks.

MORE North Carolina Bigfoot News?

In our post Charlotte Man Comes face-to-face with Bigfoot we were one of the first to report the story. Now the every paper seems to be covering it. In the same county, Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization are reporting a footprint.

Channel 9 WSOC Television, Inc (an affiliate of CNN) they files this report:
BURKE COUNTY, N.C. -- A large, muddy and mysterious footprint has captured imaginations in the area.

SLIDESHOW: Bigfoot In Burke County? Residents Discover Mysterious Footprint
The print is much larger than a human's foot, and some say it couldn’t be an animal. Its size and unexplained origin are fueling wild theories about a creature of lore making a real-life emergence in rural parts of Cleveland and Burke counties.
VIDEO: Bigfoot In Burke County? Residents Discover Mysterious Footprint

A farmer said he recently stumbled across a larger-than-life footprint near the intersection of Highway 18 and George Hildebran School Road in the southern part of Burke County.

Pork Lowman said he was walking in the woods when he came across the print, which measures 15 by 8 inches.

“It's out here in no-man's land, and that's what really got me,” Lowman said.
Lowman said its size and shape doesn’t resemble that of a bear or large cat, which raised a question: Could Bigfoot have trekked through Burke County?...

Countdown to Oregon Sasquatch Symposium: T-Minus 3 Days

If the patterson/Gimlin film is the best video evidence we have, then the best audio is the Sierra Sounds recorded by Ron Moorehead, then translated by Scott Nelson; both speakers at the Oregon Sasquatch Symposium.

Although its on the hush hush, our sources are telling us that a break-through in deciphering the Bigfoot language will be presented exclusively at the Oregon Sasquatch symposium.

Scott Nelson is a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force, private pilot, musician, developer of a local hospitality industry, and Sasquatch researcher. He is best known for his audio evidence of indistinguishable vocalization, known as The Sierra Sounds.

Ron Moorehead a retired U.S. Navy Cryptologic Technician Interpreter (Crypto-Linguist) has logged thousands of hours of collection and transcription of voice communications.

More recently he has been teaching philosophy and languages at Wentworth College. Other courses include Russian, Persian, and Spanish languages as well as philosophy and religion.

WCNC News: Charlotte Man Comes Face-To-Face with Bigfoot

It was sometime before 3:00am on June 5 when Tim Peeler claimed to have witnessed a Bigfoot, upwards of 10 feet tall, that screeched like “a night bird” and grunted in the warm night air.

So many fascinating things about this story starting with Bigfoot leaving and then returning, the witness was able to describe the Sasquatch with a yellow beard and six fingers.

by ANN SHERIDAN / NewsChannel 36
E-mail Ann: ASheridan@WCNC.com

Updated today at 11:57 PM

CASAR, N.C. -- Tim Peeler thought he was calling coyotes, but he got something that frightened even this self-proclaimed mountain man.
"Instead of them, (there was) him," he bellowed. "The thing was 10 feet tall with beautiful hair, yellowish hair and a yellow beard," said Peeler.
Sgt. Mark Self of the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office remembers the sightings of a "Bigfoot Beast" when he was a child.
"It scared me," he recalled. Self said people believed they saw a Sasquatch in the same parts of Cleveland County. The reports were frightening to the then 10-year-old boy. "It was killing animals and breaking into barns and killing chickens," he said of the reported stories.
Peeler says it's the same creature that he saw for himself just last week near his home atop a mountain in Casar. He says the beast was approaching his dogs and got wrapped around their chains.
"I rough talked him and said, 'you get away from here,'" he said. Peeler says the beast eventually left, but then came back again. "And I said, 'get, get,' and he went back down the path again."

Countdown to Oregon Sasquatch Symposium: T-Minus 5 Days

All week we are celebrating and counting down to the Oregon Sasquatch Symposium

From the Oregon Sasquatch Symposium website:

Join us in the beautiful and cozy Willamette Valley this weekend as we kick off the first annual "OSS" Oregon Sasquatch Symposium in Eugene, Oregon. This event will be held at Lane Community College in the Forum Hall. Seating is limited, and tickets are sure to go fast once they are released.

The event was originally formed to unite Oregon researchers within the same venue to share information about what they have going on, basically in their own backyard. The Sasquatch phenomena is, of course, not only an Oregon experience, but given the history of this beautifully forested state, our Sasquatch is as much a part of our culture as the Douglas Fir trees that surround it.

The 19th of June will be a day when long-term witnesses and enthusiasts share their personal Sasquatch encounters at the OSS.

The 20th of June will be the day expert testimony takes front and center stage . Although not every attendee will be from our own Oregon backyard, we are still delighted to invite them into the shadows of our majestic forests. So far, all is looking fantastic as to the forecast for the 20th lineup. Maybe it is our little known saying that has got everyone so on board. "Oregon, will treat ya so many ways, your bound to love one of em"!

::: LIST OF SPEAKERS INCLUDE :::

Seattle Times: Virginia Man on Verge of Bigfoot Discovery

Seattle Times reports Billy Willard, a Virginia resident who says, "If he finds a dead Bigfoot, he intends to walk away with the ultimate trophy, DNA evidence, to send a message to those who ridicule the believers: 'To give them the final 'Aha! I told you so.' "

Billy Willard says he's on the verge of a major discovery that could change the way humans think about the natural world, not to mention their need for a creature-proof home security system....

...Go ahead, call him a loon, a flake, a huckster. He's heard it all. But Willard knows what he knows, which is that three people from this area — a woman, her husband and their granddaughter — told him they saw a shaggy, super-sized figure on two legs gallivanting across their wooded property.

In April, Willard led a weeklong expedition to the site, where he installed five motion-sensor cameras that will snap photos if and when the big galoot wanders by again.

Willard, 41, says he'd like to lead a tour of the property and introduce the witnesses, really he would. But the woman who says she saw what she believes could have been Bigfoot fears an avalanche of ridicule, which is why Willard is left to deliver his version of what happened a few miles away, in the parking lot of a Dairy Queen.

"We believe we may be close to some kind of major discovery," he said. "All the things they would need are here, fresh water, shelter in the woods. The high concentration of sightings tells me they're here."

Squeaky Bigfoot Press Release

At Earthtimes.org there is an interesting press release regarding Mike Greene's thermal bigfoot video. Matt Moneymaker, head of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization ( BFRO) is quoted:

"This is the most important footage of a Sasquatch since Paterson/ Gimlin film taken over 40 years ago,”

The article continues on with background information provided by Greene as to how he was able to get the thermal video.

This footage, known as “The Squeaky Thermal” was first shown at Bob Gimlin’s birthday party 2 weeks later. It was viewed with wild applause and a heartfelt “Thank you, thank you so much” from Bob Gimlin, who was finally receiving some well deserved vindication of his efforts so long ago.

Michael Greene is the retired Chief of a State Fraud Investigations Bureau. has a Master’s Degree in Psychology, and is a Court Qualified Questioned Documents Expert ,and former Investigator for the Public Defender’s Office .His hobby for the last 20 years has been searching for proof of this elusive beast. This quest has taken him from glacier fields in the Yukon, to a giant meteor crater in northern Quebec, the Everglades of Florida and the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest.

In 2008 he briefly saw a Sasquatch in the Uwharrie National Forest , and spent the next year repeatedly camping at the spot, trying to encourage its return and gain some semblance of its trust.

“Over and over I left out bananas, apples, peanut butter, Zagnut bars, and little squeaking bathtub toys that my grandchildren like to play with. Hence the name 'Squeaky', one of the toys the Bigfoot took. Sometimes things would be taken , most times not. At the time I could only record for about 2 hours, the battery life of the thermal , so a lot of the night went unrecorded. This is definitely a patient man’s game.

Field n Stream Ponders the Endangered Sasquatch

Reprinted below is a letter from Otie Ellis, a reader of Field and Stream who seams passionate about the federal government stepping in and protecting Bigfoot.
Why Bigfoot should be placed on the Endangered Species List:

This is a very important matter indeed which needs addressing, and your help would be greatly appreciated. I am drafting this letter in an effort to garner your support on a topic to which I beseech to you would be a monumental issue indeed. I implore you to not take this matter lightly, it is one that will set an example for years to come and will undeniably set the standard on how all species will make their way to this most sacred of documents pertaining to the continuity of any genus.

I am not trying in no way debate this beings existence; I am simply attempting to protect this animal’s right to the continuity of its species if it in fact does exist. I have checked the list and have found that this animal is not recorded as an endangered species, I do not know if this is an oversight, or simply just apathy. But I would like to inform you that at current there are species of animal who are on the list at which we do not currently have confirmation of still existing. Case in point The Amargosa Vole, a rodent whose current existence is undetermined, who possibly may at this very moment be extinct along with countless others...

...I have heard tales of hunters firing upon un-identified animals thinking they may be bagging the big guy, later only to discover it was nothing more than a moss covered stump beside a creek; imagine if that was your son or daughter sitting there in tree camo. I know of individuals who have spent literally thousands of dollars tracking and attempting to catch this elusive creature, should its right to survive in its own environment not be protected?

...The biggest problem I could possibly see in placing this animal on the Endangered Species List would be the five minutes out your busy schedule it would take to do so, not counting the ink that would be wasted to record his name. Besides would it not be worth the effort to do this simply in an effort to save some poor un-knowing camper from one day falling victim to the hands of someone who wants to be glorified by bringing home the ultimate trophy?

Currently I do not know if Bigfoot physically exist or not, but I do know that his image exists in the hearts and minds of millions; I know this from cartoons, movies, sculptures, magazines, and virtually any other outlet to which someone can present their theory, if there are a couple out there I would not want to look them in the eye and tale them they do not have the right to live simply because the rest of society does not believe in their existence. It is not our decision to determine what species survives, but it is our responsibility to protect said species if we have the ability to do so, we should not do this because we are trying to prove his existence, but because if he does exists it is the right thing to do.

Please read our terms of use policy.
