Bigfoot Documentary Screening Includes Q&A with Experts

The Hollywood Theatre is a local Portland, Oregon historical landmark and an organization whose mission is to entertain, inspire, educate and connect the community through the art of film.

We are proud to participate in an event that includes the screening of "Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie". After the screening, there will be a panel of Bigfoot Experts; Thom Powell author of "The Locals" and "Shady Neighbors" and Guy Edwards the very editor of Bigfoot Lunch Club. And yes, after four years of publishing this blog, I have finally been elevated from the title of enthusiast to expert (Please no comments trying to take away my new title).

As you hardcore fans may remember, initially we did a post on the documentary, "Not your Typical Bigfoot Movie" back in 2008 and continued to cover them two years later after they launched their website and won tons of awards.

We even followed Dallas and Wayne as their bromance continued to be documented on the small screen on a a local TV show.

We are also excited to announce the event will be moderated by Sarah Mirk (@sarahmirk) of The Portland Mercury, a weekly alternative paper in -- you guessed it, Portland. With her wit, humor and pulse on all things important, she fits right in with the beginning credits of the TV show Portlandia (embedded below). We would say at about the minute and 24 seconds mark.

Below is the official press release from Hollywood Theaters. If you are in the area support your local Bigfooters, Film Otrganizations and weekly alternative papers.

HOLLYWOOD THEATRE

**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**

HOLLYWOOD THEATRE AND OSCILLOSCOPE’S CIRCLE OF TRUST PRESENT: NOT YOUR TYPICAL BIGFOOT MOVIE

(Portland, OR), Sept. 16, 2011 – For one night only the Hollywood Theatre brings you “Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie,” followed by a special panel of local Bigfoot researchers and moderated by Sarah Mirk of the Mercury. The panel will feature Thom Powell, author of “The Shady Neighbors,” and Guy Edwards, founder and editor of the Bigfoot Lunch Club, and there could even be prizes for audience members!

Director Jay Delaney produced a short about Dallas and Wayne ten years ago, and became so engrossed he had to come back and make a feature. Through Dallas, Wayne, and their amateur Bigfoot research, Delaney explores and explodes the American Dream; the result is a film “masterful for the dignity it infuses into the duo’s lives” that offers new perspective on unusual passions. A compelling documentary about the trials and triumphs of life in the Appalachian foot hills, the documentary portrays the power of a dream to forge friendships that provide hope and meaning to transcend the harsh realities of a dying steel town. Oh, and Sasquatch, too.

“Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie” has received multiple awards, including Official Selection at SXSW Film Festival, the Independent Film Festival of Boston, and the Athens International Film Festival. The Hollywood Theatre screening will feature special guest experts, and some surprise elements as well!

WHEN: October 17 at TBD
WHERE: The Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd.

Canadian Sasquatch is on the Money

First issue in the 3-coin series. A terrific collectible for kids of all ages!

The Royal Canadian Mint Describes the first of three cryptid coins as:

Highlights:
Children of all ages will be captivated by this large coloured coin and its mysterious theme. It’s presented in a full-colour folder that tells the fascinating story of Sasquatch and includes a pull-out map showing where it was last seen—let the intrigue begin!

Coin design:
A surprising aerial perspective of Sasquatch walking among snow covered trees, leaving behind a trail of large footprints in the snow.

Tracking a mysterious creature from Canada’s North.
Is Sasquatch myth or missing link? First Nations legends abound with haunting tales of a giant, human-like creature lurking in the mountain forests of Canada’s Yukon, British Columbia and northern Ontario.

They are not alone. In Asia, people claim to have seen Yeti, and in the western United States, witnesses describe a very similar Bigfoot—a very fast, very hairy and strong “ape-man” walking on two feet, “As big as a bear standing on its hind legs,” they say. Sasquatch is reputed to stand about 3 m (10 ft) tall and weigh 227 kg (500 lb)—and looking at the huge footprints it leaves behind, believers say the truth can’t be far off. What do you think?

Fox News Affiliate Covers Cryptid Fest

You may recognize Rick Dyer above, he helped with the 2008 Georgian frozen Bigfoot Hoax. Although he claims the Federal Government stole the body from him. You can see his 10 videos of his version. he was one of the attendees of the first annual Cryptid Fest. Headlining the fest was Ken Gerhard and Nick Redfern

You can watch the report below and read the article that accompanied the video.

ATOKA, OK -- The quest for big foot has taken trackers across America.

The mysterious monster was first reportedly seen in the forests of the Pacific Northwest.

The most famous siting was recorded in 1967 by Rodger Patterson in Crescent City, California.

Now, the hunt for Bigfoot is on in Texoma and it brought enthusiasts out to McGee Creek state park on Saturday for "Cryptid fest".

Tracker with BigFootTracker.com, Rick Dyer says, "It started with us finding the body in 2008 and then the government took it."

Tracker Jeremy Ware says, after finding the body in a forest of Pennsylvania, tracking the monster became their life, "This is something we do everyday, you know this is not something we just do for fun."

Author Nick Redfern travels the world in search of strange creatures and he comes to Texoma seeking Bigfoot.

Redfern says, "I think there's a genuine Bigfoot phenomenon. The big question is, what is it? Some people view it as a type of ape that science hasn't classified yet, but other people take it to be a paranormal thing, like a ghost and that explains why we don't catch him."

Despite the mystery, Redfern says an important part of being a tracker is to rely on scientific methods.

Redfern says, "for the most part you need to be in a location where these things are being seen and if we find evidence like hair samples or tracks."

Trackers say, there's an unusual amount of Bigfoot activity in McGee Creek Park. Some say it's due to the forest, other say, it's the water.

Trackers Nick Redfern and Ken Gerhard took us deep into the woods, following what were believed to be tracks.

Moments before arriving, trackers claim to have spotted something in the distance.

Gerhard then attached a camera to a tree in hopes of catching a glimpse of the elusive creatures.

Gernhard says, "I attach the camera right here and then when something passes by, the inferred light will detect the motion and snap a picture."

The camera was set to take photos throughout the night and trackers can only hope its evidence will be as compelling as Patterson's.

Finding Bigfoot Needs Your Help in Rhode Island

Tomorrow night (September 19th at 6:30 pm) There will be a town hall-style meeting with the cast an crew of Finding Bigfoot. The meeting will be located at the East Greenwhich Town Hall. 125 Main Street East Greenwich, RI 02818

On the BFRO website they make the request:

People outside Rhode Island can assist us over the next 24 hours with emails and phone calls to radio stations in Rhode Island (see instructions below). Messages should be sent to the DJ's asking them to mention a bigfoot meeting in East Greenwhich on Monday night. (Click for radio station contact info.)

The BFRO is holding a free open town hall meeting for people to share their Rhode Island bigfoot information (sometimes called "Big Rhody"). We'd really like to speak with eye-witnesses who have not contacted us before. Anyone with reliable second-hand information is welcome also.

After spending a few days and nights in RI, we're guessing that there are many more witnesses in RI than we previously knew about. It's a surprisingly squatchy place. Virtually all of the human attention is directed at the spectacular bays and inlets. Consequently the vast inland swamps and forests are relieved from a lot of human reactional traffic.

You can see the map and directions below.

Rhode Island, historically was not considered one of the squatchiest spots. Recently BFRO claims credible report from the area. Mostly in the the NW and the SW portions in the state. As there have been correlations made between high precipitation and sasquatch sightings, the precipitation map of Rhode Island below shows the SW area as promising.

BFRO is also requesting everybody to contact your local media in Rhode Island.

Here is a list of radio stations in Rhode Island, including links to the web pages for those stations (click here). Please go to those web sites and look for the "Contact Us" pages within those sites to find phone numbers and email addresses.

The primary radio people to alert are the jocks for the two major radio stations with drive-time morning shows: 94 HJY (email: jocks@whjy.com) and the folks at 92 Pro FM (see contact list).

If the radio hosts would like to speak with someone about the meeting, they can contact us at the following phone number: 949-278-6403.

Finding Bigfoot Producer Considers Sylvanic/Todd Standing Claims "Credible"

This is a surprise to us. Executive producer Keith Hoffman specifically addresses Todd Standing's Sylvanic Bigfoot photos and says, "Many claims sent in are rejected but not those of Sylvanic."

He continues to say, “We haven’t ruled out their claims..."

We have to take this with a grain of salt, because a TV network's producer is not going to reveal the entire conclusion of an episode in a newspaper article. After all the man is a genius as the overseer of Animal Planet's "Surprisingly Human" Brand, which brought us Finding Bigfoot.

Mr. Hoffman, if you would like to email us (feedback@bigfootlunchclub.com) and expand your thoughts of the Sylvanic Bigfoot, we extend the invitation.

Banff-area Bigfoot reports ‘credible’: Animal Planet show

Reports of hairy encounters with Bigfoot-like creatures in the Banff area are on the rise.

Earlier this month, crews from Discovery’s Animal Planet show, Finding Bigfoot, visited the mountainous region after seeing photos and video from the Sylvanic group claiming a colony of unidentified primates lives near the border between Banff and Kootenay National Park.

The show features a group of four seasoned members from the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization. Executive producer Keith Hoffman said many claims sent in are rejected but not those of Sylvanic, a group seeking definitive proof of the Bigfoot species.

“We haven’t ruled out their claims, if we didn’t think they were credible we wouldn’t have gone,” Hoffman said. “What we found was that numerous other people have had encounters ... they were called together in a town hall meeting.”

Sylvanic head Todd Standing said he expected the researchers would find people with sightings similar to his, noting he has come within about 65 metres of the creatures.

“Some of the sightings are four years old ... to go through them all would be a lifetime’s work,” he said.

Hoffman could not give a definitive answer on whether Bigfoots actually live near Banff, but encouraged people to follow along with the show and submit their own encounter claims.
Finding Bigfoot premieres Oct. 15.

5 Things about Jeff Meldrum

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has a short profile of Dr. Jeff Meldrum.

(Photo: Rachel Anne Seymour)

5 Things About Me: Anthropologist Jeff Meldrum
August 9, 2011

AAAS Member Jeff Meldrum has been facinated by the possible existance of Sasquatch since he was a child.
Jeff Meldrum, Ph.D.
Department of Biological Sciences
Idaho State University
Pocatello, Idaho

Background: As a professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University at Pocatello, I teach human anatomy in the health professions programs, as well as biological evolution and primate studies. As a researcher my interests encompass a number of topics ranging from science and religion, New World paleoprimatology, vertebrate evolutionary morphology generally, bipedalism and the emergence of modern human walking and running more specifically.

Question 1. Why did you become a researcher/engineer/scientist?
Answer: I have always been fascinated by life on planet Earth -- from my first insect collection, to the recovery and naming of extinct primate species from fossil remains. The lure of exploring new frontiers, uncovering novelties -- past and present -- drew me to the sciences.

Question 2. Share a story from your past that led to your choosing your field of work?
Answer: As a youngster, I attended a showing in the Spokane Coliseum of a documentary showcasing the Patterson-Gimlin film, which depicts a Bigfoot (or Sasquatch) filmed in northern California. My fascination with primates and early humans, and with all mysteries on the fringe of acknowledgement, seemed to converge in that film clip. The prospects of a living primate species more closely related to humanity than any other, sharing our adaptation for walking upright, spurred me on to further exploration.

Question 3. What are you most proud of in your work?
Answer: I have a sense of accomplishment that my attention to the evidence for the existence of Sasquatch has kept this matter before the gaze of the scientific community and engendered meaningful dialogue about it. To have these efforts recognized and encouraged by the likes of George Schaller, Jane Goodall, and Russell Mittermeier has been very gratifying.

In the foreword to my book, George Schaller wrote: “Jeff is a scientist, an expert in human locomotor adaptations. In Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science he examines all evidence critically, not to force a conclusion, but to establish a baseline of facts upon which further research can depend. His science is not submerged by opinion and dogmatic assumption…He disentangles fact from anecdote, supposition and wishful thinking, and concludes that the search for Yeti and Sasquatch is a valid scientific endeavor. By offering a critical scrutiny, Sasquatch does more for this field of investigation than all the past arguments and polemics of contesting experts.”

Question 4. Share a comment or opinion you have on a topical science-related issue?
Answer: There is a growing awareness of the bushiness of the hominid family tree, as well as increasing indications of the very recent persistence of a number of the branches on that tree. This raises the possibility that some of these species may in fact persist as relict populations in various corners of or globe. Mounting evidence is being seriously considered by more and more scientists.

Question 5. Share a Web link/video/blog etc. that you found that really excites you and tell us why.
Answer: In order to provide an objective venue for the publication of scholarly papers addressing the question of unrecognized species of apes and prehumans persisting into the present, and to encourage discussion among the broader scientific community, I am editing a refereed online journal, The Relict Hominoid Inquiry. The first of what I expect will be a sustained series of stimulating and illuminating research papers, essays, and reviews are soon to be posted. Documents Show Feds Believed in the Yeti

US News World and Report, a very reputable publications, has a document from the national archives supporting that the US Government did, in fact, believe in the Yeti. Click the image below to see larger version.

By Paul Bedard, Lauren Fox
September 2, 2011

From the National Archives.

Newly unearthed State Department documents confirm for the first time Uncle Sam's belief that the Abominable Snowman roamed the mountains of Nepal in the 1950s, a finding that has shocked federal officials including the archivist who discovered the papers.

Long written off as a myth—it was never caught or photographed—the documents provided by the National Archives show that officials in the State Department, Foreign Service, and U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal, not only believed in "Yeti," but endorsed rules for American expeditions to follow when hunting the toothy monster down.

"There are, at present, three regulations applicable only to expeditions searching for the Yeti in Nepal. These regulations are to be observed," said a memo from the embassy written on State Department letterhead. [Read: National Archives Recovers Stolen Lincoln Documents.]

The first rule required that expeditions buy a permit. The second demanded that the beast be photographed or taken alive. "It must not be killed or shot at except in an emergency arising out of self defense," wrote Embassy Counselor Ernest Fisk on November 30, 1959. And third, any news proving the existence of the Abominable Snowman must be cleared through the Nepalese government which probably wanted to take credit for the discovery.

Archivist Mark Murphy said he couldn't believe his eyes when he discovered the long-ignored papers written at the end of the Eisenhower administration. "I thought I was seeing things," he said. "These documents show that finding the Yeti was a big deal in the 1950s. It goes to show the government was taking this seriously."

How seriously?

One foreign service dispatch from the Embassy of New Delhi dated April 16, 1959 describes the many American expeditions involved in mountaineering and monster hunting in Nepal. [Read about other uncovered political archives.]

"American resources in the last two years have been concentrated on efforts to capture the abominable snowman," the record reads.

Tom Slick, a millionaire with a specialized interest in cryptozoology paid for three separate expeditions in Nepal to find the snow beast, immortalized in the 1964 Christmas classic Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Slick never found it and he went onto pursue bigfoot in the Pacific Northwest.

Why Don't Journalist Just Google Todd Standing?

It’s a well known feature of Google. Start typing in a search, and Google offers suggestions before you’ve even finished typing. Its called "Google Suggest" or "Auto Complete".

What happens when you type Todd Standing?

Apparently journalist don't use Google, if they did they would see Todd is associated with the word Hoax, before Bigfoot, and then Bigfoot Hoax.

We wont get too technical, but the autocomplete feature in Google works differently then the search results page you see after you click the search button. The autocomplete suggests the most popular keywords typed in the google search box. In other words, most people type "Todd Standing Hoax" when Googling Todd Standing.

Either way, he recently got more press at CTV news Calvary due to his week-long proximity to the second season filming of Finding Bigfoot. This report focuses on Todd's 10 second video proof of bigfoot. In a sidebar they also post the picture we provided in our previous Todd Standing Post. you can read the entire article below:

Hunt for Bigfoot continues in Alberta's mountains
It goes by many names all over the world including Yeti, Sasquatch, and Bigfoot. No matter the name, the creature has remained elusive to those attempting to prove its existence.

A Calgary man who originally set out seven years ago to disprove the species, now fully believes the animal is alive and well in North America.

Todd Standing recorded video that he says proves Bigfoot exists. The footage is ten seconds long and recorded a great distance from the animal.

Standing became passionate about showing the species to the world after he first saw a Bigfoot about seven years ago. He was a biologist who didn't believe it existed, but now it's a different story.

Standing heads out on 12 excursions a year hoping for a glimpse of the creature. He's learned they're nocturnal.

"During the day when the main group sleeps, I believe that there are day watchers that position themselves around the main group," says Standing. "They alert the group if anyone's coming."

Standing says he captured pictures of this individual running up a mountainside at an incredibly fast speed.

"This animal was about seven and a half feet tall, about 500 pounds," says Standing. "If that's a man in a suit he ran faster than any human being could possibly run, never mind with a big bulky suit and large feet sticking out."

Standing's Bigfoot excursions last from three to ten days. He doesn't bring a lot of food or get much sleep in that time, and his locations are remarkably close to Calgary.

"There's a trail that's right in between Banff and Kootenay National Park," explains Standing. "I follow the creek through there and I take off into the wilderness."

"Their habitat is huge. Where they go is enormous!"

Standing says despite all of his photos and videos of Bigfoot, the science community will only recognize the species when it can be physically examined.

"My goal is when we get a body, when something comes in, the scientists will take over and I'll retire."

Until then, Standing says he'll continue to learn more about what First Nations People call Sylvanic, the shadow guardian of the mountain.

The Discovery Channel is working with Standing this week on a new series called "Finding Bigfoot" that is scheduled to air this fall.

To learn more about Todd Standing's work, visit the Sylvanic Bigfoot Sightings website.
