Thom Powell: Where Finding Bigfoot Meets X-Files

Cliff Barackman and Thom Powell shooting Finding Bigfoot episode, "Dronie Loves Squatchie"

Tonight's episode of Finding Bigfoot will feature one of the most unique investigators of Bigfoot History; Thom Powell. We have reported that Thom has been ahead of the curve when it comes to the paranormal side of Bigfoot research. He is also one of the few investigators that ties the Sasquatch phenomena to the UFO mystery. In fact, his latest post, "My Life is an X-Files Episode" discusses how his latest book Edges of Science fits Bigfoot into the X-files genre.

At one point I was writing a chapter about the paranormal mysteries inherent in the enigmatic Anasazi culture.  I took a break from my writing and turned on the TV. I flipped to an X-files rerun.  To my amazement, Agent Mulder was journeying to the Anasazi ruins of New Mexico in hopes of verifying his suspicion that the extraterrestrials were hiding out right here on earth.  I shot off the TV. "Oh great," I thought. "Now Chris Carter has hacked into my hard drive."

I guess I don't care, anymore.  I finally finished writing Edges of Science.  It reads like a full season of X-files episodes.  My view agrees perfectly with that of Agent Fox Mulder.  The ETs are dug in to enclaves that are scattered throughout the earth.  David Duchovny's character, Fox Mulder is right. Gillian Anderson's character, Agent Scully, the sexy skeptic, is wrong. Sexy, but wrong.

Read Thom's behind the scenes behind -the-scenes Finding Bigfoot episode recap of Dronie meets Squatchie

And read his ties to his approach to Bigfoot. Think X-Files with a Bigfoot Twist

Results are in! Joe Rogan Questions Everything is an Initial Success

One segment of SyFy's Joe Rogan Questions Everything featured Thom Powell

First, from a strictly ratings point of view the show was definitely a success. Here are the results from Ratings Watch:

Syfy's new unscripted series Joe Rogan Questions Everything became the channel's most watched reality premiere in more than five months, averaging 1.3 million total viewers, 720K Adults 25-54 and 693K Adults 18-49 during its debut on Wednesday, July 24 from 10-11PM (ET/PT).

The new series also delivered the best Wednesday unscripted series premiere in more than 15 months in Adults 18-49, Adults 25-54 and total viewers.

Powered by Joe Rogan and Paranormal Witness at 9PM, Syfy posted its highest-rated Wednesday prime time period (8-11PM) among Adults 18-34, Adults 18-49 and total viewers since October 2012.

In prime time, Syfy ranked #6 among Adults 25-54 and #8 among Adults 18-49.

Huffington Post was intrigued by the DNA segment with Dr. David Swensen

He came up with some pretty compelling evidence along the way. Our knowledge of DNA has advanced tremendously in recent decades, and putting that knowledge toward the myth of Bigfoot provided some interesting results. Dr. David Swenson, a biochemist, examined DNA that was allegedly from a Bigfoot.

“There is an unknown animal that appears to be some kind of a hybrid between a human and something else," Dr. Swenson said.

“You read this DNA sequencing and you’re like, this could be a real animal?” Rogan asked him. Swenson was fairly certain that DNA that complete and complex could not be faked. Read More...
Poptimal says this about the show:

Rogan’s Bigfoot episode hopefully gave us a great slice of how the series will continue to flow, since it had equal measures of science and levity. Not only did we see a PhD-level scientist dissect what was purported to be Sasquatch dung, we also got to learn new terminology that we may never have encountered on the course of normal conversation. For example, we now can win a Jeopardy question about what a “blobsquatch” is (it’s a blurry image of Sasquatch) and know the intricacies of “wood knocking,” which means you hit a tree using a specific pattern that equates to Morse code for Bigfoots.

What was refreshing about the show was that when Rogan went out Sasquatch hunting for the evening with two Bigfoot experts, he was listening to them as if they were telling him where to find a restaurant and he was a starving man. It was clear that he truly wanted to learn what they had to offer, rather than some previous Bigfoot search shows where the cameraman is so obviously rolling his eyes and chuckling while chasing the Sasquatch hunters through the woods.

Exploring Onward and Upward

The series will include six episodes, with Bigfoot being the first, followed by next week’s show, which  delves into the question of whether humans can use technology to manipulate the weather. Rogan plans to continue exploring to pique his knowledge and that of the viewing audience. Read more...

Thom Powell Drinks the Ketchum Kool-Aid

Thom offers up a tasting of the Ketchum Kool-Aid
"If that makes me a “Ketchum supporter” then, yes, I guess I drank the Kool-Aid. All I can say is, it was delicious." -- Thom Powell

There is no doubt that Bigfoot Lunch Club is a friend of Bigfoot author, Thom Powell. Heck I even illustrated the cover of his best selling Bigfoot book Shady Neighbors. I am also a huge fan of his previous must-have book The Locals. Click the following link to buy either of his Bigfoot books.

Due to Thom Powell's books he is on record for reporting many of the Bigfoot phenomena before they became mainstream conversations--mainstream among bigfooters anyway. While not everybody "bought" into these topics we still discuss them; topics like infrasound, cover-ups, habituation and yes, even Bigfoot DNA. Thom Powell is no hack when it comes to the topic, he has given a lot of thought to it and clearly has made his own conclusions.

Thom and I talked about the topic of his recent post, "Bigfoot DNA Evidence Redux" a full week before he posted it. We didn't agree much over the phone, but if I'm honest, his blog post affords him greater ability to make his points. Points of which I still disagree with, but I do have some favorite parts. I loved his synopsis.
OK, so here it is in a nutshell: 109 samples were obtained from all over North America.
(Obviously, the sasquatch phenomenon is more widespread than most people realize.) Most samples were hair, but not all. Blood, saliva, and even a tissue sample was analyzed. Not all of the work was done by a single lab. Some of it was farmed out to university labs that were not initially given any background about the samples they were asked to examine.

The findings were remarkably consistent: mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA), which is indicative of the female component of the genome, came back as human! The nDNA (nuclear DNA from the male progenitor) was found to be ‘novel’, which is geneticist code for “doesn’t match anything previously extracted.”  Also, large sections of the DNA strands appeared as single strand molecules (haploid), as opposed to the uniformly double-stranded DNA of all human DNA that is not found in sex cells (gametes). This might indicate that the DNA being sequenced was highly degraded DNA, but degraded DNA is found to contain lots of bacteria, and no bacteria was found in conjunction with the DNA that showed single strand configuration.  It was not degraded, but it was single strand DNA in about half of the segments that were sequenced. Multiple labs observed this anomaly, an[d] dutifully reported it to Ketchum.
It is the last sentence that I find troublesome. Does it matter that Ketchum was dutiful?

In another paragraph from his post, Thom and I absolutely agree that Ketchum's study can be vindicated if she allowed other scientist to replicate her work.
I suggested to Dr. Ketchum that vindication of her work will only happen when it is replicated by another study, maybe even more than one. She wholeheartedly agreed. We are told that Dr. Bryan Sykes at Cambridge is already on it. Meanwhile, Ketchum has complete confidence that her methodology and her result will withstand the test of time and scientific scrutiny, if scientists will just look objectively at her work.
There are a few parts where the post seems like a Valentine to Ketchum, but I have been known to fawn over personalities myself; namely Cliff Barackman, Sharon Hill and Thom Powell himself. My biggest concern regarding Thom Powell's post is that people will miss his reference to Chapter 10: “No Stone Left Unturned.” of The Locals.

This is where Thom impresses (and inspires) me most, with his own studies and thoughts compiled from many sources.
There is one final doozy of a stone that is still unturned.  It’s sort of the eight hundred pound gorilla in the room that nobody wants to talk about...

I’m referring to the other half of the sasquatch genome that the Ketchum study identified; the part that isn’t human. The sasquatch genome, according to the Ketchum’s work, is human DNA that interspersed with DNA that is absolutely unknown.  It is neither ape, nor human, not lemur.  Ketchum has no idea what it is, nor does anyone else, but the ‘novel’, single strand, haploid DNA is there for anyone to find who knows how to sequence it. Is it some evolutionary offshoot of humanity that we have yet to identify in the fossil record?  Maybe. But the mysterious sequences are single strand, that is haploid DNA, and all terrestrial DNA in somatic cells (blood, hair, tissue, bone) is diploid unless it is in gametes (sex cells).

OK, so what is the origin of this truly novel DNA that Melba Ketchum found in the sasquatch genome? For one possible answer, check out The Locals, Chapter 10: “No Stone Left Unturned.”  What gave me a chill when I read the Ketchum study is the possibility that I may have written down an answer ten years before I even asked this question.

Read Thom's complete post regarding his thoughts on the Ketchum Study at ThomSquatch. While you are there buy his Bigfoot Books too.

Stay tuned. Tomorrow I will publish a thoughtful letter sent to us from a Ketchum advocate!

Today in Bigfoot History | JAN 16, 2002 | Prints Found Near Skinny Bigfoot Sighting

Photograph of a possible track found by Ray Crowe Near Skinny Bigfoot Sighting
"very, very skinny, 9 foot tall, hairy man" --Linda Boydson's description of what she saw on January 9th and later reported on January 16th.

Today, January 16th, 2002, Wireless Flash Weird News reports a sighting of a "skinny" Bigfoot standing in the middle of the freeway:
Wireless Flash Weird News: January 16, 2002

Bony Bigfoot Almost Street-Meat

MULTNOMAH FALLS, Ore. (Wireless Flash) -

An Idaho family recently had a run-in with a Bigfoot that almost turned into a run-over - as in road kill. Linda Boydson claims she and her son came within inches of running over an unusually-thin Bigfoot while driving near Multnomah Fall, Oregon. Boydson says she was zooming around a corner on the freeway late one night and saw a "very, very skinny, 9 foot tall, hairy man" standing in the slow lane. She barely missed hitting the creature - probably because it was so skinny. However, despite being super-thin, Boydson doesn't think the Sasquatch was bulimic because it looked as muscular as a well-toned athlete. However, Boydson admits her first thought when she saw how bony the Bigfoot looked was "Go eat something, Sasquatch!"

In the January 2002 Track Record, issue #113, Ray Crow of the International Bigfoot Society wrote about the investigation he and Thom Powell did. You can read the report below.

Multnomah County, Oregon
January 9th, 2002
On 1-84, westbound lane, about 3-4 miles west of Multnomah Falls, between, mile markers 26 and 27. Driving 65-70 mph, when the 7-8 foot tall creature was seen by Jason Boydston, and his mother Linda, who was driving, at 9:15 PM.

Creature crossed in front of car toward railing on freeway to the right, as if it was heading toward the Columbia River.

She nearly hit it, missing by two feet. It was dark and overcast when the creature crossed swiftly, swinging its arms.

It had broad shoulders, skinny waist, and was completely covered in dark brown hair, and had a rounded, dome shaped head.

On January 13th myself (Ray Crowe) and wife Theata investigated the area at milepost 28, where there was a place along the freeway to park the car. Underneath an overpass there was access to the Columbia River and I did a brief survey.

Four tracks were found, one filled with silt as if the tide had receded (tides recorded upstream as far as Beacon Rock by Lewis and Clark in 1804), another seven inch impression was photographed three feet away. It was one and a quarter inches deep, and appeared to have killed plant growth.

Another three feet away, a skidded track was noted that also killed plant life.

A fourth possible track, more of a mark, was noted another three feet away. All appeared to be coming from the river and following the bank eastward.

As I walked the riverbank, Theata made a car count, noting there were about 18 vehicles a minute westbound at 3:00 pm along this busy section of the freeway on Sunday afternoon.

At 9:15 pm on a Wednesday weeknight traffic has been somewhat lighter. Even at 3 pm...there were occasional breaks in traffic when I might have crossed the freeway walking rapidly.
UPDATE: In the comments below, Author Thom Powell mentioned there are more details about this story to be found in his popular  book, "The Locals." We wanted to make sure you knew where to get your signed copies of this book at ThomSquatch.com!

Thom Powell: Bigfoot Too Smart for a Blimp

Thom Powell Looking up at Bigfoot Blimp
"I'm not saying it might not work in other places with less forest canopy, but I would emphatically advise my good friends at the Falcon Project to not waste their precious time and blimp gas over the forests of western Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, or even northern California." -- Thom Powell

Thom Powell is one of the most prophetic authors in Bigfooting. When he published The Locals ten years ago he touched upon topics that were once taboo and now up for reconsideration. His newest book Shady Neighbors has already produced insight into Bigfoot behavior using the vehicle of fiction. If you buy the books now, in ten years, when the only thing we have is Bigfoot DNA, you will at least have The Locals to help guide you on Bigfoot behavior.

Thom's prophetic tendencies, does not come tea leaves, but comes from being a pioneer. He was one of the first Bigfooters to create a network of surveillance cameras back in the 1990's. This was back when you ordered the camera and built it yourself from a kit.

In his newest post Thom Powell speaks highly of the Falcon Project team and wishes them success. Thom also expresses concerns based on his experience with cameras, radio controlled planes, and flying over some the squatchiest areas in the northwest.

Below are a few quotes from Thom's Post
Speaking as a guy who has spent a whole lot of time 'squatching' in forests of the Pacific Northwest, I'm pretty sure the favored habitat of the creatures in question is dense forest. What good is any aircraft in finding anything under the canopy of dense forest?
Maybe Texas, or parts of Idaho have a more broken forest canopy that would allow them to see the ground.  Fine. Concentrate on those areas, but forget about forested terrain. Period.
Based on my own crude field experiments, I concluded that sasquatch intelligence was at least as great as ours. In my field experiemnts, the sasquatch  had demonstrated (to my satisfaction) the ability to generate infrasound, to disable electronics, including cameras, from a distance, to somehow cloak their presence,
You have to read the Thom's fascinating post for yourself at his website Thomsquatch.com. If you disagree? Leave Thom a comment, he is always eager to here the other side. Click the following link to read Thom's post titled, "Finding a Bigfoot by Blimp, Really?"

Author Thom Powell Talks Bigfoot Spying in Richland, WA Part 1/4

Author Thom Powell next to an impressive display of the London Trackway
"Thom was one of my favorite speakers during the conference, in part because he proposes a different perspective on the field of research and has made some observations that others either have not or are not discussing." --Henry Patterson at GhostTheory.com

Full Disclosure: At Bigfoot Lunch Club we are completely biased when it comes to Thom Powell. We are huge fans. Until we met Mr. Powell it was hard for us to bridge the gap between the value we put on physical evidence and the relevance of the paranormal aspects Bigfooting. Thom Powell's "Spy Paradigm" comes close to bridging that gap. He proposes that our efforts would be best spent gathering information, like the CIA does, as oppose to trying to do hard science that requires us to duplicate results. In other words, Bigfoot is an unwilling uncooperative subject and we could gain better traction doing intelligence gathering.

If you were to gauge by audience participation and the continued buzz afterwards, Thom Powell's presentation was the most well-received.  Henry Patterson, who was there, had this to write on Ghost Theory:
"Thom was one of my favorite speakers during the conference, in part because he proposes a different perspective on the field of research and has made some observations that others either have not or are not discussing." Henry Patterson
Watch author Thom Powell in the video below as he uses his trademark self-effacing charm to encourage a paradigm shift among bigfooters. Also in the video are topics Powell breached over a decade before they became casual conversation among Bigfooters. Want to know what the next decade has in store for Bigfoot research? Thom Powell: Review of London Trackway Talk at Sasquatch Brewery.

Author Thom Powell next to an impressive display of the London Trackway Discovery
Author Thom Powell spoke to a crowded room at the Sasquatch Brewery last Tuesday the 20th. As you can see the restaurant/brewery temporarily became a museum for a night. Click the following link for our complete coverage of Thom Powell.

Not all of the casts in the display are from the London Trackway, but take note on the five that are behind Thom's elbow. The 3rd from the left on the top row and the 2nd from the left on the second row both support a midtarsel break feature. The midtarsel break is a proposed feature of Sasquatch foot morphology. Basically it is a hinged foot as opposed to an arch like humans have. The hinged foot allows for  flat prints without an arch and animated prints that exaggerate the hinge during push off. The prints behind Thom support such animation.

If you have had the fortune of seeing Thom speak before you know he can capture the attention of the audience. Many of the topics he covered, last Tuesday, he had introduced over 10 years ago in the acclaimed book, The Locals. Although these topics were borderline taboo then, many of these "fringe" ideas have gained popular acceptance in the community; habituation, mind-speak, and telepathy. In his recent book, Shady Neighbors, he weaves the "new fringe" of the Sasquatch cannon, that can only best be told through allegory and fiction. Rest assured, readers will find what is in store for the next ten years of Sasquatch research in Shady Neighbors; mosquitoes, burial grounds, and curve balls.

Our favorite topics Thom Powell covered is the the proposal that Bigfoot research is intelligence gathering not science. In his post, aptly titled, Bigfoot Research: Intel not Science, he spells it out more concisely. Below is a blurb:
Bigfoot researchers, then, are like the CIA and the spooks at CIA are not utterly focused on unassailable proof when they evaluate the information they gather. I suspect they take spurious and incomplete data sources because sometimes that's all they can get, and they use them to look for recurring observations that suggest suspected patterns of behavior that might have predictive value.  Everything they gather is a bit uncertain but this does not justify throwing that data away.  It is understood that the quarry is smart enough to cover their tracks.  Indirect and uncertain sources of information are still valued and exploited. London Bigfoot Tracks: Tobby Johnson Interview at the Scene

Toby Johnson sending a postcard from the past.
Date/Time: Saturday, ‎February ‎18, ‎2012, ‏‎7:11:50 AM  Location: London, Oregon

At this point Toby, Thom, Beth and I had only 3 hours of sleep. We had been casting almost the entire night prior. This video was shot right after daybreak. I decided to record this interview for posterity's sake. This is the location four days after the initial discovery. In the interview there are two corrections that must be made.
  1. The original discoverer, Max Roy, was not walking his dog, he was approached by a man walking his dog who mentioned the prints to Max. The name of the man and his dog are unknown.
  2. The independent count that Cliff Barackman and I, Guy Edwards, came up with was 122. Toby Mentions over 160 in the video. The 160 may be other prints that were discovered nearby, Cliff and I only counted the ones in sequence.
You can get the details Toby is describing in our earlier post titled, "Over 120 Sequential Sasquatch Prints Found South of Eugene." Enjoy the video below

Cliff has released some great photos from his research of the London Tracks. Cliff was one of the first guys on the scene. You can read our sequence of events at our post, "Over 120 Sequential Sasquatch Prints Found South of Eugene" If you want to see great photos and specifics from Cliff Barackman's perspective then you need to head over to NorthAmericanBigfoot.com. Thom Powell, ever the author, writes one of the most gripping narratives of the events at his post titled, "The London Tracks: Where Serendipity Met Synchronicity"

Below is a slideshow compilation of most of the first photos in chronological order. The photographers are from Max Roy (first one to contact Toby about the Tracks) Toby Johnson (One of the first to discover the 120+ sequence), Cliff Barackman (The first to cast the majority of the sequence), and Thom Powell (The first person to say he got the second most casts of the sequence).

London Trackway: Over 120 Sequential Sasquatch Prints Found

One of the first measurements taken by Toby Johnson 15-16 inch print
South of Eugene, over 120 footprint tracks were found in a clay-mixed substrate that was a perfect material to capture and record footprints. We believe the tracks were made as recently as Saturday February 11th, although the first few prints were not discovered until Sunday the 12th.

Quick run down of events.
  • (SUN Feb 12th) Max is a retired man who once worked in the auto industry and now spends his retirement restoring cars, he happened to be looking for cars in the London, Oregon when he is approached by a man walking his dog.
  • (SUN Feb 12th) The man walking his dog mentions to Max there are three Bigfoot prints near the tree line. Max checks it out and is surprised to see the three good tracks
  • (MON Feb 13th)  Max can't sleep, has to go back to  site to take pictures.
  • (TUE Feb 14th)  Max remembers Toby Johnson's Sasquatch-mobile, it had been decorated with large Bigfoot stickers resembling footprints. He had also recalled reading an newspaper article of the first Oregon Sasquatch Symposium Toby had held in 2010 at Lane Community College in Eugene. The Sasquatch-mobile is now owned by Toby's ex-wife, sans stickers, but Max, the car afficianado that he is, recognizes the vehicle non-the-less. So when Max went share the Bigfoot prints he contacted Toby's ex-wife first. Max gives his contact info to Toby's Ex
  • (TUE Feb 14th)  Toby calls Max and max sends the pics of the three prints via phone.
  • (WED Feb 14th 8:00pm ~ THURS  Feb 15th 7:00am) Toby goes to the site with his friend, an avid hunter and a local. Since Toby's friend wishes to remain anonymous, we will call him Tracker. Both Toby and Tracker see the original three and few others that were not photographed, these other tracks were in heavy vegetation.
  • (THURS  Feb 15th afternoon) Toby goes home and Tracker ges home. Toby tries to return to site later in afternoon, due to obligations he can not stay long, as he leaves Tracker returns. Tracker is with his daughter's boyfriend, and continues to follow the tracks on his own time. Tracker follows the tracks out of the vegetation into a clay-like substrate and realizes there are at least a hundred prints. He calls Toby.
  • (THURS  Feb 15th 3pm-ish) Toby calls Cliff Barackman, co-host of Finding Bigfoot and a self-described "track/cast-nerd". Cliff drives 2 hours to investigate the scene. Cliff also contacts Chris Minniear who picked up most of the casting material, did about half of the 65 cast made. Chris also documented the evenings events on video.
  • (FRI Feb 16th 6pm) I am able to get a ride with Thom Powell, we meet Beth Heikkinen and Toby Johsnson and see the tracks ourselves.
  • (SAT Feb 17th 6am) Our original count was around 118 sequential prints. Cliff Barackman was able to count 122, we will confirm if his count are the sequential set or total prints in the area.We made two set of measurements recording step length stride length.
Step length is the distance between the point of initial contact of one foot and the point of initial contact of the opposite foot. In normal gait, right and left step lengths are similar.
Stride length is the distance between successive points of initial contact of the same foot. Right and left stride lengths are normally equal.
Below is a rough illustrated diagram of the the general path and the measurements we took. Knowing how difficult it is to get exact measurements, I added a third column titled Calculated Stride Length to compare against the Measured Stride Lengths. The numbers in the calculated column are based on the recorded step length. the numbers I am interested in are the average and means.
The mean is the usual average,
so in Series A: Step Length average is 47.29:
(45 + 48 + 46 + 45 + 46 + 54+ 47) ÷7 = 47.29
The median is the middle value, so I'll have to rewrite the list in order
so in Series A: Step Length median is 46:
45, 45, 46, 46, 47, 48, 54
As you can see in the two sets, Series A and Series B, there average numbers and the means for the step and stride are relatively close.

3 Dates Set for Sasquatch and Suds Meetings in Portland, Oregon

Official poster for the first 3 Sasquatch and Suds events (click to see larger poster)
New details regarding the monthly Sasquatch and Suds events at the Sasquatch Brewery. Save the dates: FEB 21st, Cliff Barackman; MAR 20th, Thom Powell; APR 17th, Beth Heikkenin. These dates have been confirmed by Toby Johnson of the Oregon Sasquatch Symposium. Below you can read a brief Bio of the scheduled speakers .

CLIFF BARACKMAN
Cliff's interest in physical evidence led him to take a keen interest in footprint casts. Over the years, what started out as the gathering of a few Bigfoot souvenirs has eventually led him to holding one of the largest cast collections in the country.
A former member of the BFRO, Cliff's expert opinion, level-headed approach and analytical mind are essential. When numbers need to be extracted for the sake of data analysis, or when a footprint needs to be permanently recorded, he is there to offer his unique skills.
Visit the official website CliffBarackman.com and read his blog NorthAmericanBigfoot.com
THOM POWELL
Thom authored a book about Sasquatch research entitled "The Locals" which was described by reviewer Lisa Kearns as, "a brilliant combination of science and storytelling". His was the first book to suggest many fairly radical ideas that have since been endorsed by many contemporary researchers, such as habituation, infrasound, paranormal elements, human levels of intelligence in the Sasquatch, awareness of cameras, and much more.
Thom's newest book "Shady Neighbors" continues his unique ability to craft great narration, while revealing Bigfoot truths.
Check out the official Shady Neighbors website and read Thom's Blog.
BETH HEIKKENIN
Beth Heikkinen is an independent researcher living in the Pacific NW. Beth's first daytime sighting happened 50 miles from her home. Since that time, and with the help of wonderful people, her background now includes tacking, backpacking and hiking.
Of course we will be there as well, keep up-to-date with the upcoming 2012 Oregon Sasquatch Symposium and OSS sponsored events at the facebook page  http://www.facebook.com/TheOregonSasquatchSymposium

Oregon Sasquatch Symposium Starts "Sasquatch & Suds" at Sasquatch Brewing Company

The start of a great monthly tradition: Sasquatch & Suds

The Sasquatch and Suds are monthly events open to the public, anybody and everybody are encouraged to join us. Toby Johnson, the man behind these events couldn't have picked a better place than the Sasquatch Brewery.  (Thom Powell gets a little credit too).

The Portland Monthly has already written an article about it. Below you can read about the Sasquatch Brewery and at the very end of the article they mention the monthly event.:

First Impression: Sasquatch Brewing Company
A new home for brews, bites, and babies
Posted by: Sarah Moore on Jan 23, 2012 at 04:00PM
If your weird uncle polished up his floors to a high sheen, bought a bumload of brewing equipment and a whole bunch of classy wooden furniture, and started cranking out gourmet popcorn and toothsome cheese platters, his place would probably look a lot like Sasquatch Brewing Company, a spanking new gastro-pub located out on Capitol Highway. Sporting Southwestern wall hangings, a mounted buck head and a variety of eclectic art—not to mention the requisite ginormous beer-selection-bedecked chalkboard—the place maintains a fun garage-sale charm with none of the spiderwebs. It’s family-friendly vibe, far from detracting, adds to the allure of this refurbished Portland rambler.
Prospective visitors should be advised that, while cozy and cheerful, the bar area has limited seating. Groups should plan to gather around tables, and while doing so, enjoy some of the wonderful food on offer, such as beet fritters with chevre, or buttermilk fried chicken. During happy hour, peckish patrons can munch on excellent fries or house-made herbed popcorn for $2, warm olives or a honeyed pretzel for $3, and the house burger for $6. With its comfy chairs, broad rain-spattered windows, evening candles, and able serving crew, Sasquatch is as good a place to duck in and grab some chow as it is to stay and chill for an hour, two, three…up to you, really.
Live music is in the works and on February 21, giant ape enthusiasts can come meet notables from Animal Planet’s Finding Bigfoot and learn more about the pub’s elusive namesake. In the meantime you can partake of a wide selection of worthy craft beers (e.g., Oakshire’s Overcast Espresso Stout or the venerable Fred Ale from Hair of the Dog) while anticipating the arrival of Sasquatch’s own house beers; among those planned are a few IPAs, a brown ale, red ale, and a light session ale, all made with Northwest ingredients.

RGMS theater department presents upbeat, family comedy as its winter production

The Southwest Community Connection, Dec 1, 2011
HILLSDALE – Southwest Portlanders have the chance to catch a glimpse of Bigfoot in this neck of the woods, when Robert Gray Middle School’s theater department presents its production of “North Woods Nonsense,” a comedy by Andrew Ross, starting Dec. 1.

The action in this witty, upbeat comedy centers around the lobby of the rundown Lost Loon Hotel at Moose Bottom Lake, where handyman Pete has written a fictional story about Bigfoot kidnapping a local resident that ends up being published in a national tabloid.

People from all over nevertheless take the account as true and come to the hotel to search for Sasquatch on their own.

This sighting also provides the perfect excuse for Birch and Pine, assistants to inept congressman Oakley, to suggest a trip to the hotel to keep him out of the public eye. The pair is trying to keep Oakley, who is head of Congress’ parks committee, from speaking in public to prevent him from sharing his ideas of turning the Grand Canyon into a giant lake, building a mall at Yellowstone and building condos at Mount Rushmore.

Hilarity ensues with the convergence of the Bigfoot enthusiasts and the reporters hot on Oakley’s trail.

“It’s an amazingly fantabulous blow-you-away comedy the whole family would love,” said eighth-grader Ian Sloan, who plays Rep. Oakley.

Cast members said they’ve all had fun embodying their characters.

“I feel like my character is some part of me,” said eighth-grader Nicole Panet-Raymond, one of the sisters who manages the Lost Loon Hotel.

“I love my character because I get to scream a lot,” said eighth-grader Gwyneth Bushman, who play’s Panet-Raymond’s eclectic sister.
The cast has been rehearsing together since the second week of school, and its members said the group is now like a giant family.

“There’s a lot of love, and it’s a lot of fun,” Sloan said.

“Because we’ve created such a collaboration, it’s amazing to see it come together on stage as well,” Director Jules Moorhouse said. “It’s a great family show.”

“North Woods Nonsense” will open Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. on the school’s stage, located at 5505 S.W. 23rd Ave., and will continue Dec. 2 and 9 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 10 at 2 p.m.

Tickets cost $5 for students and $7 for adults and are available at the door or online through www.graypta.org. The theater and box office will open 30 minutes prior to each performance. All money raised through ticket and concession sales will support the Robert Gray PTA Theater Program.

Bigfoot takes to stage, page
Bigfoot isn’t just making an appearance on Robert Gray’s stage.

Thom Powell, a science teacher at the school, published his second book, “Shady Neighbors,” earlier this year, and the sasquatch mystery is the novel’s central theme.

Combining Bigfoot and baseball, the novel follows a rural family threatened by the imminent development of its land, according to the book’s description on Amazon.com. When the family begins to notice strange occurrences in the area caused by an unknown force, they must learn to work together with that force for the greater good.

“Shady Neighbors” is available for purchase on Amazon. Powell’s first book, “The Locals, a Contemporary Investigation of the Bigfoot/Sasquatch Phenomenon,” is a nonfiction investigation of the sasquatch legend. It is also available online.

Bigfoot Documentary Screening Includes Q&A with Experts

The Hollywood Theatre is a local Portland, Oregon historical landmark and an organization whose mission is to entertain, inspire, educate and connect the community through the art of film.

We are proud to participate in an event that includes the screening of "Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie". After the screening, there will be a panel of Bigfoot Experts; Thom Powell author of "The Locals" and "Shady Neighbors" and Guy Edwards the very editor of Bigfoot Lunch Club. And yes, after four years of publishing this blog, I have finally been elevated from the title of enthusiast to expert (Please no comments trying to take away my new title).

As you hardcore fans may remember, initially we did a post on the documentary, "Not your Typical Bigfoot Movie" back in 2008 and continued to cover them two years later after they launched their website and won tons of awards.

We even followed Dallas and Wayne as their bromance continued to be documented on the small screen on a a local TV show.

We are also excited to announce the event will be moderated by Sarah Mirk (@sarahmirk) of The Portland Mercury, a weekly alternative paper in -- you guessed it, Portland. With her wit, humor and pulse on all things important, she fits right in with the beginning credits of the TV show Portlandia (embedded below). We would say at about the minute and 24 seconds mark.

Below is the official press release from Hollywood Theaters. If you are in the area support your local Bigfooters, Film Otrganizations and weekly alternative papers.

HOLLYWOOD THEATRE

**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**

HOLLYWOOD THEATRE AND OSCILLOSCOPE’S CIRCLE OF TRUST PRESENT: NOT YOUR TYPICAL BIGFOOT MOVIE

(Portland, OR), Sept. 16, 2011 – For one night only the Hollywood Theatre brings you “Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie,” followed by a special panel of local Bigfoot researchers and moderated by Sarah Mirk of the Mercury. The panel will feature Thom Powell, author of “The Shady Neighbors,” and Guy Edwards, founder and editor of the Bigfoot Lunch Club, and there could even be prizes for audience members!

Director Jay Delaney produced a short about Dallas and Wayne ten years ago, and became so engrossed he had to come back and make a feature. Through Dallas, Wayne, and their amateur Bigfoot research, Delaney explores and explodes the American Dream; the result is a film “masterful for the dignity it infuses into the duo’s lives” that offers new perspective on unusual passions. A compelling documentary about the trials and triumphs of life in the Appalachian foot hills, the documentary portrays the power of a dream to forge friendships that provide hope and meaning to transcend the harsh realities of a dying steel town. Oh, and Sasquatch, too.

“Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie” has received multiple awards, including Official Selection at SXSW Film Festival, the Independent Film Festival of Boston, and the Athens International Film Festival. The Hollywood Theatre screening will feature special guest experts, and some surprise elements as well!

WHEN: October 17 at TBD
WHERE: The Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd.
