Sasquatch Revealed with Dr. Jeff Meldrum

On Dec 28th in the Dalles, Oregon Dr. Jeff Meldrum gave a presentation to kick off the "Sasquatch Revealed" exhibit at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. The exhibit was curated by published author Chris Murphy.

Susan Buce, marketing director of the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, deserves a lot of credit for a successful evening; which included a generous last-minute additional presentation by Dr. Jeff Meldrum for those who were not able to buy dinner tickets. The event was completely sold out and very successful.

Among the two speakers that were publicized, Dr. Jeff Meldrum and Thomas Steenburg, a surprise guest was Bigfoot legend Bob Gimlin, who recalled the moment he and Roger Patterson filmed Patty. (watch a video of Bob Gimlin describing that day while watching a 3d recreation).

After listening to Tom Steenburg I was impressed with his no-nonsense approach to research. He definitely declared the typical caveats, addressing that portions of his research were anecdotal, but he mentioned it at the top of his presentation and didn't belabor the point. In my opinion many bigfooters, myself included, can spend too much time prefacing and defending. Mr. Steenburg does not suffer from this and gets right to the point. 

I immediately purchased two books authored by Tom Steenburg after the event; In Search of Giants: Meet the Sasquatch and Bigfoot Sasquatch Encounters. I recommend them in that order. These are great books that cover the Canadian side of the Sasquatch Phenomena.

Speaking of books, novelist Kirk Sigurdson attended the event with me and we were able to spend some more time afterwords with Cliff Barackman, Bob Gimlin, Dr. Meldrum, Chris Murphy, and Tom Steenburg. Cliff had some casts from his Orang Pendek Project and shared them with Meldrum.

Kultus Week, Day 5: Bigfoot and Trolls

Earlier this month novelist Kirk Sigurdson released his much-anticipated novel about Bigfoot. Like any great novel, it's themes transcend what the book is "about". There is no doubt if you are fascinated by Bigfoot and want to read something by somebody who knows a thing or two about the Sasquatch phenomenon, Kultus will be a book you will recommend to a friend.

I feel like a lot of Bigfoot fiction (movies too) fall short because they are usually ONLY about Bigfoot. Too many nods to established Bigfoot canon; Bluff Creek, Ape Canyon, P/G Film. I understand there should be some homage to these pillars of bigfootery, but what about something that stretches us a little?

 This brings us to Kultus. And the Bigfoot troll.

In the Bigfoot community we have the fortune of Native American oral traditions, these have shaped our curiosity and even our research. What if there is an additional way to describe Bigfoot, based on other traditions? How far have we dug? Are there European or Arabic Bigfoot legends we have ignored?

While the Bigfoot in Kultus is traditional, in the sense that it does not conflict with most behaviors we have heard and read about, it is an inspiration to broaden our understanding of the Sasquatch phenomena.

My name is Sanel Hodzic and today December 12, 2012 at approximately 3 pm I was hiking with my dog up Teapot Hill Hiking Trail near Cultus Lake Provincial Park in the Fraser Valley nearest would be toward Chilliwack., British Columbia, Canada. 

On my way down the trail I was changing my music on my iPhone not really paying attention to my surroundings when I noticed that my dog, Lila was barking like crazy. She was about 5 feet ahead of me and staring off into the distance. So I stopped and looked ahead when I noticed something in the bushes about 50 feet ahead of me. I was so scared that I froze and just kept staring at it. After about a 10 second stare down I switched my camera on and quickly took a picture. Meanwhile my dog is still barking like crazy. I then picked up a rock and threw it in the direction of the thing and then I quickly turned around and ran back up the hill. I waited about until I saw someone else coming down the hill and followed him closely behind all the down. I do believe I saw the Sasquatch/Bigfoot that day. 

If I could describe it I would say he was about 8-9 feet tall, very hairy and big. His skin colour was brownish. His face was something like a monkey/ape. I took with a full zoom with my iPhone 4. He was about 50 yards away from me. He’s in the middle right-ish of the picture. Only thing I noticed really was how he was standing, looking at me. It had a long face, but bigger forehead with long hair starting from about the top of its head.

Interesting that this sighting took place near Cultus lake while we are celebrating Kultus week. This of course is a homophone; a word that sounds the same but is spelled differently.

Former NC Lawmen to Investigate Bigfoot and Strange Lights

The News Harold reports on a a local North Carolina team determined to find the truth regarding the reporting of strange lights and Bigfoot. Porter and his group hope to determine if they are related or independent phenomena. Read the excerpt below with a brief profile of the groups intentions.

The group is made up of ex-law enforcement, a private investigator and sales managers.

“We go in, when we hear of an unexplained event or something someone’s blaming on … paranormal or some other activity,” Porter Sr. said. “We work off that principal and we try to answer those (questions). Obviously, if we’re able to answer them, then we’re able to identify what it is. If we’re not able to answer those, then we deem it unexplained and we let the people decide.”

Porter Sr. said his group uses video surveillance, take environmental notes and collect evidence samples. The group then turns interprets the video footage and sends the samples to experts in their respective fields for processing.

Porter Sr. said his group always comes back with evidence.

When his group ventured recently to an area off Old N.C. 105, a group member called Porter Sr. and said they had gotten a report of a Sasquatch in the area.

“I went up into the area for something totally different, and while we were in the area, one of my groups contacted me and advised that … they had had reports of a Sasquatch in the area, (when ) talking with some local residents,” Porter Sr. said. “They said, what we find odd about that is we’re actually having something follow us in the woods and do tree knocks and throw rocks over our heads.”

Kultus Book Week Day 3: Sasquatch and Us Interview with Kirk Sigurdson.

While a few of you are just now becoming familiar with Kirk Sigurdson, many of you know he has been a major influence in the community for almost over a decade. In fact one of his greatest contributions hass been as a consultant to Christopher Munch's well-reviewed movie Letters from The Big Man. 

In his blog post, "Bonus Feature Interview in Letters From The Big Man" Kirk describes the opportunity:

Thom [Powell] and I helped to steer Chris towards a deep and meaningful direction. In his usual way, Thom was the enabler. He encouraged Chris to "go there." And since I had just returned from "there," I was more than happy to share my insights.

"There," in the context of our discussion, involved sasquatch as not merely a relict species of hominid, but also as a deeply complex being that quite possibly pushes the boundaries of that magical place between known and unknown technologies. Yes, that's right, we made it abundantly clear to Chris that the rumors about sasquatch and intra-dimensional goings-on were more than merely the wishful thinking of New Age tree-huggers and faerie dust.

As you may know, the rest is history: Chris Munch's film, Letters from the Big Man, is today the most philosophical story ever to grace the silver screen involving a sasquatch. I feel privileged to have been included in the "brain storming" stages of the project, prior to when Chris began conjuring his imaginary world into which his story line figured prominently.

"$10 Million Bigfoot Bounty" Set to Premiere in January

Spike TV is offering largest cash prize in TV history for the proof of Bigfoot

It's been on the radar of Bigfoot enthusiasts since last October and now it's set to become "reality"...literally.
Spike TV announced "10 Million Bigfoot Bounty" will premiere on January 10, at 10 p.m. Eastern time. The show will be hosted by former Superman Dean Cain, who the network calls an "avid outdoorsman and hunter." The $10 million reward will go to anyone who can offer irrefutable proof of Sasquatch's existence.

What To Expect

The show will follow nine teams of Bigfoot hunters into the wilderness of the Northwest, the area where most Sasquatch sightings are reported. Patrick Kevin Day of the L.A. Times put it a bit more bluntly, describing the teams as "angry sexist rednecks" who are the worst group possible to try and hunt a camera-shy creature. He stopped short of saying the teams will ride their Harleys while sporting their motorcycle helmets in the woods, but conceded the show will at least be "watchable."
The teams will feature some familiar names as they pertain to Bigfoot culture. Justin Smedja, who claims to have shot two Bigfoots near Gold Lake, Calif., in October 2010. Michael Merchant, of Snow Walker Prime fame, is also featured in the show. There is little hope the $10 million prize will be claimed, but the show has guaranteed a $100,000 research grant to the team who presents the most compelling evidence.

The Challenges

Each episode will present the teams two challenges: a field test and a hunt for the actual creature in Bigfoot "hot zones." Dr. Todd Disotell of New York University will be on the scene with state-of-the-art mobile technology to analyze and test all DNA evidence presented by the teams. Natalia Reagan, an anthropologist who specializes in primate studies, will also be on hand to judge the findings. The show, however, is almost guaranteed to center more around the personalities and adventures surrounding the teams than the actual evidence they gather.

International Audience

Bigfoot enthusiasts in Europe and elsewhere around the world will not be deprived of the potential breaking news regarding Sasquatch's existence. Endemol, a Netherland-based media distribution company, has been granted the rights to air all eight episodes on its networks in 23 countries. The company is no stranger to reality television, being the creator of both "Big Brother" and "Deal Or No Deal." It also doesn't hurt that "10 Million Bigfoot Bounty" is produced by Charlie Corwin's Original Media, which is owned by Endemol.

“Sasquatch Revealed” Exhibit opens Dec. 28

THE DALLES, Oregon — Does Sasquatch exist? Rumors of a large, hairy, man-like creature roaming the Cascade Mountains have existed for centuries. Where does myth end and science begin? Columbia Gorge Discovery Center presents “Sasquatch Revealed,” a new exhibit opening Saturday, December 28, 2013 with dinner at 5:30 p.m. and a speaker presentation by Dr. Jeff Meldrum, Chris Murphy, and Thomas Steenburg following at 6:30 p.m.

This exhibit draws from all the available scientific research and evidence compiled to date on the hominoid known as Sasquatch, or Bigfoot. The display, curated by Christopher Murphy of Vancouver, British Columbia, will be at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center through February 23, 2014. Explore audio segments, view a gallery of footprint and handprint casts, reports of sightings in Wasco County and United States, newspaper reports, comparative skulls, and artist renditions.

Buffet dinner will be served starting at 5:30 pm in the Basalt Rock Café, with your choice of herb-encrusted prime rib or roast salmon with lemon dill glaze. Children’s menu includes ‘Mountain Mac & Cheese’ and ‘Sasquatch Stronganoff’.

Following the dinner, noted Sasquatch researchers Dr. Jeff Meldrum, Chris Murphy and Thomas Steenburg will give a presentation.

DR. JEFF MELDRUM, Professor of Anthropology from Idaho State University will give a talk Dec. 28 and sign his acclaimed book, “Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science.” Medrum’s book takes a detailed look at the scientific DNA and forensic evidence gathered on Sasquatch. Meldrum has published numerous academic papers ranging from vertebrate evolutionary morphology, and the emergence of bipedal locomotion in modern humans. Dr. Meldrum is also a co-editor of a series of books on paleontology.

CHRIS MURPHY became involved in the Sasquatch mystery when he met René Dahinden in 1993. He then worked with Dahinden in producing posters from the Patterson/Gimlin film and marketing them along with Sasquatch footprint casts.  In 2000, Chris embarked on a project to assemble a comprehensive pictorial presentation on the Sasquatch. This initiative led to publication of his book “Meet the Sasquatch,” written in association with John Green and Thomas Steenburg, and his Sasquatch exhibit at the Vancouver, B.C., Museum.

THOMAS STEENBURG, born in Ontario, Canada, in 1961, has been actively interested in the Sasquatch since a child. Since 1979, he has actively gone into the rugged outdoors in search of the elusive Sasquatch. Having interviewed many eye-witnesses and investigate many reported sightings, he is all the more determined to pursue and answer the question: is the Sasquatch real or simply folklore? Steenburg has authored three books on the Sasquatch mystery and has appeared in several television documentaries and as a public speaker.

Today in Bigfoot History | Dec 1, 1998 | Fouke Monster Sightings Surge

The season 4 opener of Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot revisited the home of the Fouke Monster. Four decades later this local legend continues to stir the hearts and minds of the local residents. Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Tuesday, December 1, 1998 -- FOUKE -- The Fouke monster, a legendary bigfoot look-alike, still stalks the lowlands of Miller County, according to local residents.

"There were 40-some sightings last year," said Rickie Roberts, Fouke's unofficial monster spokesman. "There were 22 sightings in one day. ... There's even one guy who swears there's a family [of monsters] who live behind his house."

Roberts, who owns the Monster Mart grocery on U.S. 71, said the latest sighting came July 17 when four people purportedly saw the creature walking along a dry creek bed about 5 miles south of town. Sightings of the Fouke monster have been reported since the 1940s, according to newspaper articles. In all that time, no one has photographed the creature or captured it.

For a time, the only evidence of the creature was a plaster cast of a 13 1/2-inch footprint taken from a local soybean field. The cast was destroyed in a service station fire in the late 1970s, Roberts said. "That was the only real proof you'd have around here" that the monster exists, he said.

Though scores of residents have reported seeing the hairy creature, experts scoff at its existence. Frank Schamback, an archaeologist at Southern Arkansas University at Magnolia who debunked the footprint as a hoax in the 1970s, said he doesn't believe in the Fouke monster.

"They like mystery," he said. "It's just that. People like to have a mystery."

Residents would have proof by now if the creature existed, Schamback said. "There are people down there with dogs who would have run it down in two days" if it existed, he said. Toby Giles, Miller County's chief sheriff's deputy, said there haven't been any reported sightings in the past few years, but "we do [have one] every once in a while." The sheriff's office used to receive a few reported sightings when he joined the department about 14 years ago, Giles said. "But nothing was ever confirmed," Giles said. "It's still a well-talked-about subject." The town plays up its connection with the monster. Down the road from Monster Mart, a visitor can poke his head through a hole in a metal silhouette and have his photo taken as the monster.

Roberts, who sells monster T-shirts, caps and bumper stickers at his store, said the long-armed creature has been described as 6 to 9 feet tall with red, brown, black or black-gray hair covering its body. Roberts said he has never seen the animal, which he speculates might be a "swamp ape," and he wouldn't admit it if he had. "I wouldn't say a word," he said. "People'd think you're crazy." He has heard an eerie howl, possibly from the monster, that almost defies description, Roberts said.

"I've heard it twice. It's a different sound. I don't know what you would call it," he said. "It'd be a sound like a cross between a cow bellow and a panther screaming." The monster has never harmed anyone although it may have caused a few heart-pounding frights, Roberts said. "This thing has never attacked anyone," he said. The Fouke monster brought attention to the town in 1972. Film crews descended on Fouke that year to make the Legend of Boggy Creek and forever put the community on the map.

The town of 614 is listed on the Internet as one of the top 10 places in the world to look for bigfoot, the name associated with creatures similar to the Fouke monster, Roberts said. "We get people in here every day" looking for the monster, he said. "We had a guy save his money for two years to come down from Indiana this summer."

Roberts' wife, Beverly, said too many credible people have seen what they described as the monster for her not to believe it exists. "I've got family members who firmly believe they've seen it," she said, noting that they moved away shortly after the experience. "Whatever it is, there is something." Tracy Nichols and Sue Page, who work at City Hall, said they have heard scores of monster tales over the years.

Nichols, noting that the creature is generally associated with "a bad odor," said a local man recently saw the monster twice, "but he won't talk about.

He's afraid of being ridiculed." Although uncertain of her own beliefs, she said, "I've heard credible people come through here who said they've seen it." Nichols admitted that the legend is fun.

"We went hunting for it the weekend before last," she said. Page, whose constable father appeared as himself in the Legend of Boggy Creek, said, "I don't know if it's true or not." "We have calls from way off [from people] wanting to know about it," she said. Fouke resident Lavelle Brune said she thought she saw the monster recently. "We saw it" while driving out of town, she said, but "we got to looking, and it was just a bush."

How to Hunt Bigfoot in the Wilderness...Without Weapons

We don't need weapons to "hunt" Bigfoot

Hunting has long been one of the great American pastimes. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recorded nearly 13 million active American hunters in the last survey, who combined for over 200 million days chasing deer, elk, turkey and even Kodiak bears. Hunting has been a vital part of human activity since the days our ancestors first picked up a sharpened stick, but what would happen if you had to hunt Bigfoot and bring home a meal without the aid of a high-powered rifle or compound bow?

Snare It Up

Passive hunting lets you gather up your next meal without having to stalk, chase or overpower your quarry, this technique will come in quite handy while hunting Sasquatch and conserving your energy. By creating snares, hunters can collect prey animals in a situation where you cannot afford to waste heat or energy. Place a snare where you can find the telltale signs of small animals, such as tracks, droppings, chewed plants and nests. Rigging a snare requires only a length of rope or elastic material and can be done by putting a knotted loop over an area. Small animals with poor vision, namely rabbits and squirrels, walk over the rope, which tightens when they pull it forward.

Netting

Dispatching an immobilized animal poses little difficulty, even when larger than you or armed with teeth and claws, but in the case of this big creature, this approach might not be the best strategy to use. For example, imagine placing nets in areas where Bigfoot will run when startled, upon capture you will have only a few precious seconds to either tranquilize or take a fatal shot, so be sure to make it count. It's hard to improvise a net out in the wild unless you can find a source of thin bark, so purchase nylon nets at an outdoor gear store to be prepared for hunting with your hands.

Pitfalls And Perils

One of the oldest methods of hunting large game incorporates the power of gravity. By creating a pitfall, larger animals that would be impossible to take down without a weapon can be made into a meal. Creating a pitfall while is time and energy-intensive it is probably the best strategy for hunting Bigfoot, however, since you will need to dig out an area deep enough that a creature cannot climb out of, and then cover it with leaves, sticks, and other camouflage. Lay a pitfall along an area where Bigfoot is sure to cross, such as a worn path. Larger animals congregate around water sources, which can be scarce in rural areas, so laying a pitfall near the only pond or river in an area gives a higher chance of success.

Foot Traps

More likely to catch an animal than a simple snare, a hunting trap will immobilize any animal that wanders into its catch spring. To make a foot trap from scratch, sharpen stakes with a pocketknife that will clamp down on an animal's paws or hooves. Some public areas have outlawed the use of foot traps, due to their risk to other hunters. Be sure to take a hunter course to understand the state's hunting laws and regulations. These courses help you come home with a better probability of catching the historic creature known as Bigfoot, whether you go out armed with a weapon or just your own two hands.

On October 20th HopsSquatch will host the Wunderland of  Bigfoot presentation and Kirk Sigurdson will be the lagomorph that takes us there. Kirk Sigurdson was first exposed to the public on the DVD "Letters From The Big Man." On the DVD was a bonus 42-minute documentary titled Sasquatch and Us: Where We've Been, Where We've Going. Kirk was one of only seven interviewed by the award winning director.

Ever wonder why sasquatches have yet to be scientifically accounted for, when any other animal in similar circumstances would have been documented long ago?  How about the way sasquatch phenomena tends to be so dramatically polarizing among researchers, almost to the point of fomenting a kind of religious extremism?  And why has centuries upon centuries of Indian wisdom (and warnings) on the subject been largely ignored?

Kirk Sigurdson, a professor of creative writing at Portland Community College, will examine cultural mechanisms at work in today's "scientific dictatorship." This approach should help to train some new light on the sasquatch question.

In addition, Sigurdson will discuss his novel, Kultus, which delves into the trappings of both legends and qualitative field research associated with forest giants.  The novel was written in the early 2000's, and then shelved--due in part to supernatural events beyond the author's control.

Kultus is scheduled to be published on October 31, 2013.   It will be available for purchase at Amazon.com.

Abominable Science! by Loxton and Prothero is a favor to Bigfooters

Abominable Science! is being described as skeptical and empathetic towards cryptozoology

Last month I wrote a post about Abominable Science! with two reviews. One review was concerned  the book was being too soft on cryptozoologists¹ and another review by Bill Munns was critical of how little acknowledgement was given to the amount of research done on the Patterson Gimlin film². Furthermore Daniel Perez, editor/publisher of the newsletter, Bigfoot Times wrote, "Daniel Loxton and Donald R. Prothero, try to present themselves as unbiased and professional, but their bias and obvious omissions is so troublesome it is blinding at times."³

Sharon Hill, who has made previous contributions to Bigfoot Lunch Club and is acknowledged more than once in Abominable Science! shares on Huffington Post that the book is getting positive attention from science outlets and little love from Bigfooters.⁴

I am grateful for the book and find it sympathetic to cryptozoology. The ideology of Bigfooters is a spectrum that spans from the paranormal to the biological. As someone who falls into the biological camp, I welcome doubt and criticism. When someone disagrees without being disagreeable, it is a favor and a contribution to Bigfoot research. I feel like Daniel Loxton and Donald R. Prothero have done us a favor.

It is clear Abominable Science! presents many challenges to flagship Bigfoot encounters, but these challenges, in my opinion, are in good faith and worth accepting as challenges. Did William Roe's encounter change the consensus description of Sasquatches from "giant hairy Indians" to a more ape-like creatures? Is the fact that there is no record of any Bigfoot researcher ever meeting William Roe face-to-face significant? Is the Patterson-Gimlin film really too similar to to the Roe encounter?

There are a few points where I believe transitive logic (If A=B and B=C then A must = C)  is abused. On page 49, "If Roe's report is a hoax, we would be compelled to conclude that the Patterson-Gimlin film is also a hoax." Compelled to conclude? Compelled to question--maybe. On page 70 Loxton writes, "we must grant that Sasquatches are routinely exposed to the same mortal risks as bears." Why? These statements are backed more by assumption than clear arguments. On the balance I applaud Loxton for casting doubt and challenging the encounters I embrace as definitive Bigfoot canon. Loxton deserves credit for framing and hinging modern bigfoot lore on the Roe encounter, it is a novel context that does not outright dismiss Bigfoot but underscores the value of having a type specimen.

As for Prothero? As even Bill Munns agrees the first chapter, Cryptozoology: Real Science or Pseudoscience lays out, "admirably and meticulously what is good science and what is not." For this chapter alone I recommend this book to all bigfooters and aspiring cryptozoologist alike.

Also included in the first chapter is a formula used estimate the home range of mammals based on body mass (A_hr=0.024M^1.38). It should be noted there are updated more complex formulas that provide more accurate results⁵, but the point is this is how we should be thinking if we really care about understanding and protecting Bigfoot. Plus, I would have never found the updated model for determining home range if I was not introduced to the concept by Prothero in the first place. I believe we need more animal biologist and statisticians in the field of Bigfoot research. Abominable Science! gives us a taste of what it is like to think like one.

David Paulides Explains the Complexity of Bigfoot DNA

Below is a snippet of Jeffery Pritchett's Interview with David Paulides. Jeffery Pritchett is the host of the radio show The Church Of Mabus at www.ChurchOfMabusRadio.com. He has a Bachelors in Science Communications. The radio show has often been described as Heavy Metal meets Paranormal. 

Mr. Pritchett does a great job interviewing Paulides asking ten questions ranging from the Hoopa Project to Dr. Melba Ketchum. It is the answer to the tenth question that is interesting to us, where Mr. Paulides explains the complexity of Bigfoot DNA.

[Jeffery Pritchett:] DNA testing has been around for over a decade yet there has never been another bigfoot group to attempt classification, why?


[David Paulides:] When we started the bigfoot DNA project we collected dozens of samples and then solicited specimens from different groups and individuals across North America, eventually collecting over one hundred.

The bigfoot DNA is much more complex than anyone outside the project understands. Dr. Melba Ketchum has been the lead scientific researcher and has caught much flack from other groups who have no idea of the complexity or the internal protocol develops by researchers. There are some outsiders who believe they are entitled to more information then has been released.

Our intentions have always been to submit the results of the bigfoot DNA project to a scientific journal and to have our results peer reviewed. If other scientists of international notoriety give the paper their blessing, there is then no basis for refusing to accept the validity of the results. Protocol in this process is mandated, scientists (participants) can never release results of the testing until the paper is peer reviewed.

People need to understand that the results of the DNA are not Dr. Ketchum’s interpretation or the product of her independent work, they are the cumulative effort of many organizations and institutions who contributed their intellect to the results. Great discoveries sometimes take years of success and failure before enlightenment occurs. The results of this study will change the way the world views the biped.
