Skamania County Protecting Bigfoot for 45 Years

Skamania County Postcard designed by Guy Edwards
"The year was 1969. Man achieved its first landing on the moon, The Beatles released Abbey Road, and it became illegal to kill Sasquatch" --Peter Holmstrom, Mysterious Universe

Peter Holmstrom writes an in-depth article for MysteriousUniverse.Org that celebrates the 45th anniversary of the ordinance that protects Bigfoot in Skamania County.

The article titled, "The Bigfoot Law: Celebrating 45 Years of Safety" is one of the best articles written on the law that now protects Bigfoot. read the teaser below and then jump to the full article:

The Bigfoot flap of 1969 began in March, when John and Linda Durrell were driving up with their family on a camping trip above Carson, Wa. Nearing their destination, Linda Durrell spotted something of the side of the road. Getting out to take a look, she was surprised to see extraordinarily large footprints in the snow, far larger than any human could have made.

Not quite sure what to do, Linda and family called the local sheriff’s office, who took plaster casts of the footprints for later investigation. They prints measured 22 inches long and 7 ½ inches wide. Investigating the surrounding area, the local deputy found even more footprints. Read More...

Skamania 3rd Annual Bigfoot Bash

Every Year in late August Skamania county celebrates their 1984 ordinance, declaring Bigfoot a protected species. Although most places on the web have a small snippet of the ordinance we have the whole thing here.

Today, August 27th, 2010, they are celebrating it again, although they have not promoted it very heavily this year. Even the website seems to be below par to previous two years. This is the third annual Bigfoot Bash and Bounty, they are 45 minutes away from downtown Portland. If you get a chance go check them out! They have tons of activities planned and vendors with plenty of good stuff.

this is a great opportunity for you to read the county ordinance at our earlier post here.

April Fools Joke Becomes Law

...or bigfoot can put you in jail.

On April 01, in 1969 Skamania County, Washington was the first official U.S. governmental body to legally recognize Bigfoot as a species. By passing of Ordinance 69-01, Skamania County declared the killing of bigfoot illegal; punishable by a $10,000 fine and 5 years in prison. Although originally an April Fool's joke, it sat in the books for over a dozen years before becoming an official statute with legally binding consequences.

In 1984 the ordinance was repealled and amended as ordinance 1984-2. The new ordinance reduced the fine and jail time to “gross misdemeanor” status. Don't be fooled by the lighter misdeameanor status, due to an exception written into the ordinance, if the animal (Bigfoot) is found to be humanoid, the person who killed the Bigfoot will be tried for homicide.

Even more interesting, the more recent ordinance sets up all of Skamania as a “Sasquatch Refuge.” The reason – Bigfoot is an “endangered species” in Skamania County. Skamania does not claim Bigfoot is endangered overall, just within its own county lines.

Save Bigfoot

I have been kicking around an idea I had lately, only to find I have been beaten to it. Once in a while when the topic of Bf evidence comes up, I'll hear someone say, "next time someone sees Bigfoot they should try and shoot it, and then there would be evidence!"

My concern is the amount of times I hear this, so I looked into how to protect a species under the Endangered Species Act. During my research I have found that the government has already done so, at least on the local level. So Skamania County has a real ordinance! I would like to see if BfR$LC can't get this done on the federal level and perhaps protect the big guy from harm.

Bigfoot Bash and Bounty

Okay, we have a few months to go. Set for August 22nd to 24th, 2008, hopefully many sunny days will find us between now and then. Regardless, I look forward to the Bigfoot Bash and Bounty which will be held this year starting August 22nd in Stevenson, Skamania County, Washington.

There will be prizes for following the clues which will lead you to all 12 Bigfoots, a 5k run (if there is a t-shirt, I am so there), a beer garden (which I will definitely be hitting), as well as family softball, music, food and more.

The BFRLC will be attempting to contact these folks, perhaps we can set up some sort of booth or sponsorship...let's discuss this at our next meeting.

Looks like a Bigfooteriffic time.
