Fox News: Killing Bigfoot OK in Texas – if he's Texan

John Lloyd Sharf (middle) elevates the kill/no-kill controversy to Fax News

Killing Bigfoot OK in Texas – if he's Texan

Texas has no position on the existence of Bigfoot -- but go on, hunt it anyway.
John Lloyd Scharf, a Bigfoot fan from Oregon, emailed the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department last week about hunting unknown creatures.

Chief of staff Lt. David. Sinclair told FoxNews.com he responded with a straight description of the law -- which hinges not on whether the mythical beast exists, but on precisely how the government would label it.
“The statute that you cite (Section 61.021) refers only to game birds, game animals, fish, marine animals or other aquatic life. Generally speaking, other nongame wildlife is listed in Chapter 67 (nongame and threatened species) and Chapter 68 (nongame endangered species),” Sinclair wrote back to Scharf.
“An exotic animal is an animal that is non-indigenous to Texas. Unless the exotic is an endangered species, then exotics may be hunted on private property with landowner consent.”

The law boils down to provenance, Scharf decided. If Bigfoot is indigenous to Texas, it can be killed.
'We’ve got hundreds of sightings going back decades. I don’t think we’d have any problem proving it’s indigenous.' - Brian Brown, the Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy

But Sinclair told FoxNews.com his response has been taken wildly out of context.

“This guy never really alluded to Bigfoot, though it seems maybe he said something about Sasquatch,” Sinclair told FoxNews.com. “He took my statement and said that it was safe to hunt an ‘indigenous cryptid,’ whatever that is. He misquoted me.”

Scharf did not respond to several FoxNews.com requests for more information. But the rules Sinclair cites are clear: It would be legal to shoot Sasquatch.

“Nongame” means wildlife indigenous to Texas that aren’t deer, sheep, geese, alligators, or any other animal hunted for food. If the Commission doesn’t specifically list a beast -- and needless to say, Bigfoot doesn’t make the list -- it isn’t protected.

So Bigfoot a Longhorn? Absolutely, said Brian Brown, media coordinator for the Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy.

“We’ve got hundreds of sightings going back decades. I don’t think we’d have any problem proving it’s indigenous. We think they’re all over the region,” Brown told FoxNews.com.

Oregon resident Scharf worried that the policy could be interpreted as “kill it first, ID it after.” He thinks it could even lead to premature extinction of the Bigfoot species.

“Individuals of an unknown species, and therefore not be listed as ‘endangered’ under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, could be exterminated without criminal or civil repercussions – essentially causing extinction?” he asked on an enthusiast bulletin board.

Brown argued that killing a Bigfoot is a necessary way to prove its existence.

“Our primary mission is to conserve these animals. They cannot be conserved until they are accepted as fact. They will not be accepted as fact until a type specimen is produced. It's as simple as that,” he wrote on the group’s website, texasbigfoot.com.

Laws prevent hunters from killing people, of course. Such regulations wouldn’t govern Bigfoot, Brown told FoxNews.com.

“It’s not murder, it’s an animal,” he said. “They don’t do anything that makes you think that they’re humans or some lost tribe. They don’t really have attributes or do anything that one typically associates with humans.”

Open-minded Sasquatch seekers in the Lone Star State all seem positive that the numerous regional sightings mean something is out there.

"I have been immersed in Sasquatch research for a number of years, and I can tell you in my mind a mountain of evidence supports the existence of these creatures," Ken Gerhard, a San Antonio cryptozoologist who co-wrote "Monsters of Texas," recently told the Houston Chronicle.

Gerhard, who also heads up the Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization, said Texas has one of the nation’s highest incidents of Bigfoot reports, outranked only by Washington, California, Oregon, Ohio and Florida.

That doesn’t mean the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is tracking them, of course.
“Here at Parks and Wildlife, we don’t have any evidence that Bigfoot exists,” Sinclair told FoxNews.com.
“We don’t want to get drawn into the debate about it.”

Fox Carolina: Dr. Jeff Meldrum Speaks at Wofford College Today

(left to right: Dr Jeff Meldrum and a bust of Bigfoot)
Wofford College has invited Dr. Jeff Meldrum to speak as part of  a course titled "Urban Legends: (mostly) True Stories Verified by a Friend of a Friend." Below we have two articles; one from the Wofford's website, the second one is from the Local Fox news affiliate in South Carolina.

‘Bigfoot’ researcher to speak at Wofford Friday
Professor to discuss scientific work with Interim class on urban legends

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Renowned “bigfoot” researcher Dr. Jeff Meldrum of the Idaho State University, will speak at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Wofford to students studying “urban legends” during the January Interim.
The program, to be held in the Olin Teaching Theater in the Franklin W. Olin Building, is free and open to the public.
Meldrum, a professor of anthropology at Idaho State, is a widely known expert on primate locomotion and also has become renowned for his scientific research into the phenomenon of “bigfoot,” or “sasquatch.” He has appeared in a number of documentaries for the Discovery Channel and has written several popular books on the topic, including his most well-known, “Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science.” Meldrum is unique because he is on the short list of credentialed scientists who feel it is worthwhile to conduct scientific research into the bigfoot phenomenon.
The Interim course “Urban Legends: (Mostly) True Stories Verified by a Friend of a Friend” is being taught by Jenny B. Johnson, assistant professor of accounting and finance and coordinator of the accounting program, and Ryan A. Johnson, assistant professor of accounting and finance. The course explores contemporary legends, including how urban legends are more than rumor and innuendo – they reveal individual values, prejudices, hopes and fears.
Meldrum joined the ISU faculty in 1993, after a stint with Northwestern University. His research revolves around questions of vertebrate evolutionary morphology, especially primate locomotor adaptations. His formal study of primates began with doctoral research on terrestrial adaptations in African primates, and has since taken him from the dusty skeletal cabinets of far-flung museums to the remote badlands of Colombia and Argentina in search of fossil New World primates. He has published extensively on the evolutionary history of the South American primates and has described several new extinct species. He has documented varied primate locomotor specializations in laboratory and semi-natural settings. More recently his attention has returned to the emergence of modern human bipedalism. His co-edited volume, “From Biped to Strider: the Emergence of Modern Human Walking, Running, and Resource Transport,” proposes a more recent innovation of modern striding gait than previously assumed. As the acting director of the Center for Motion Analysis and Biomechanics (CMAB) he is collaborating with engineering faculty, paleontologists, and the Idaho Virtualization Lab, to model the pattern of evolution of the hominid foot skeleton. His interests also encompass the evaluation of the footprints purportedly left by an unrecognized North American ape, commonly known as sasquatch.

Massive NC Bigfoot Search Gains Momentum

Charlotte, NC Fox Affiliate has a video segment with Leonard Braley, showing the same photos we shared with you yesterday. Below is an article that accompanies the video as well as a plug to sale sasquatch gear on someones website.

TROY,NC- About an hour east of Charlotte, Troy, NC has a population of just over 3000, residents say everyone knows their neighbor. That was until super bowl Sunday when someone spotted a hairy beast.

"Sasquatch, Bigfoot, in Florida they call it the skunk ape, in the Appalachians and in parts of Tennessee and Kentucky it's known as the Wollybooger," says John Pate.

Whatever you call it, residents say they have proof it exists with pictures of 17 inch footprints.

"When I came out the stretch between the prints is 10 to 12 feet, you know that's a pretty big stretch," said Leonard Braley. Strides that are too big to be a human says the B.F.R.O. or the Bigfoot Field Research Organization.

"Every state, except Hawaii, has had some type of Sasquatch/ Bigfoot sighting," said John Pate who is an investigator with the B.F.R.O. and is certain between 3 and 6 thousand big foot creatures exist in North America. "They are very very intelligent they have great eyesight they have great hearing and they know how to survive," said Pate. He says they often communicate by knocking on wood.

Bigfoot also reportedly eats plants and meat and throws rocks at campers.
One hundred fifty people showed up at a planning meeting Tuesday night where Pate and others organized a grid search. That search will happen on Saturday.
If you are interested in purchasing bigfoot search gear such as shirts, hoodies and hats send a message to Chad Thompson.
