A Journalist Gets Melba Ketchum to Comment on Bigfoot DNA

Dr. Melba Ketchum working on DNA
"...weeks instead of many months, that’s for sure.” --Melba Ketchum on how soon her Bigfoot DNA results will be public

Apparently earlier this week (Monday November 26th, 2012) Scott Sandsburry of the Yakima Herald contacted Melba Ketchum and got her to comment on the 50-page manuscript that has documented her study and, as she claims, supports the idea that Bigfoot is part human.

The excerpt below contains just the quotes from Melba Ketchum.
Reached on telephone Monday, Ketchum said the 50-page manuscript containing the research and DNA findings is still in peer review at a scientific journal. As for whether the premature announcement would impact that, she said, “I hope not. So far we haven’t heard anything that says it’s going to stop it.” As for when the study might become public, she said, “in weeks instead of many months, that’s for sure.”

Ketchum said the study had sequenced “three complete Sasquatch nuclear genomes” and determined the species is a human hybrid — “the result of males of an unknown hominin species crossing with female Homo sapiens.”

Sasquatch nuclear DNA, Ketchum said, “is incredibly novel and not at all what we had expected. While it has human nuclear DNA within its genome, there are also distinctly non-human, non-archaic hominin (member of the genus Homo, including Homo sapiens), and non-ape sequences. We describe it as a mosaic of human and novel non-human sequence.”
The article does contain further quotes from Melba Ketchum's surrogates.  One in particular is a quote from Thom Cantrall.
The release of Ketchum’s findings, Cantrall said, is “igniting a war” among different factions in the Bigfoot-believing community — those adamant that the creature is an ape or gorilla, and those who are convinced it’s more human than not.
We can report that there is no war. The debate Cantrall is referring to is less about Bigfoot and more about whether the Bigfoot community accepts that humans are also apes. In other words, humans are apes and most likely Bigfoots are apes too.

  1. "We can report that there is no war. " Are you crazy, there have been death threats, the Mindspeak crowd demands that they are humans.

    1. Squabbling among a select few does not constitute a war. Those that are the most hostile, do not represent any large margin of the community. They are a minority and probably wished they represented a larger percentage of the community.

    2. You, Steven S., Team Tazer snarks, etc. have allied with the uninformed scientists. The bigfoot community will not forget...lost your trust-worthiness in exchange for some traffic.

    3. Rather, I would argue that Melba has lost her trustworthiness. Nephilim, anyone?

    4. Anonymous, I feel really bad that you think I would trade traffic for integrity. First, I don't benefit from traffic. I'm one of the few Bigfoot blogs that doesn't have ads. Second, I've posted multiple perspectives regarding Melba Ketchum's Bigfoot DNA study. As a proponent of Melba Ketchum, I'm sure you would enjoy them.

Even the "peer-review" post I did says the consensus among scientists is that Dr. Melba Ketchum has the credentials.

As for my own opinion, I have only expressed that I feel Melba Ketchum has poorly communicated and mismanaged expectations. I would say the same thing to a family member or a friend if I thought the same of them.

    5. If this thread is representative, it sure looks like a war, Guy. Lol. Too bad you folks don't have any objective standard of truth to fall back on, like, say, scientific reason. But by all means, keep it up. The sooner the lot of you clueless amateurs are laughed off TV and the web, the better.

    6. Well anon, this thread is not indicative of the community, or representative, to use your term. I hope we do disagree with each other, I hope we do share different views. Diversity and difference of opinion is is vital to the progress of any group.

I understand there are those that have put a great deal of work and reputation into Ketchum's Bigfoot DNA study. They are personally invested in it and respond as such.

I believe in the Bigfoot community and truly appreciate everyone in it. Any ruffled feathers are temporary because, for whatever reason, Bigfoot has brought us together.

  4. @Guy Edwards; "... I feel Melba Ketchum has poorly communicated and mismanaged expectations."

Uh, not if her target audience is the scientific community, Dude. Sorry, if that hurts a little.

    1. There has certainly been a good deal of misticism discussed concerning Ketchum an her so-called publicist. If the target audience is the mainstream scientific community, poor communication and "mismanaged expectations" is an understatement to say the least. It is professional suicide.

    2. Then she has failed miserably.

  5. Much of the information about her comes from blog chatter and very little directly from her. The more she engages the enthusiasts, the more she puts her scientific cred at risk. She is better off letting the data speak for itself, as much as possible. That seems to have been her approach, the exception being her attempts at damage control by responding to leaked information.
