Animal Planet Returns to New Jersey

There are three things to watch out for in tonight's two-hour Finding Bigfoot episode; one, the team returns to New Jersey with Director/Comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, two, a bonus 30 minutes of behind the scenes footage, and three, if the teasers are to be believed, Bobo remarks on a a broad daylight sighting of a Sasquatch.

In the press release tonight's episode title was "Bobo, Bobcat and the Big Red Eye", it is listed on programming guides as "Squatchers Take New Jersey"

This is a return to New Jersey her's the details from Animal Planet's Presser:

New Jersey: The team heads back to the Garden State to investigate "Big Red Eye," a nickname for sasquatches in New Jersey. Many are surprised by the large amount of sasquatch activity that occurs in this Mid-Atlantic state, and this time, they have a secret weapon: bigfoot enthusiast and legendary comedian Bobcat Goldthwait (Police Academy Franchise, Scrooged). The team hopes that Bobcat's iconic yell can help attract "Big Red Eye."

Bobcat Goldthwait is also the Director/Writer of found footage Bigfoot movie Willow Creek. Fans, you know we have been hinting at Bobcat's Bigfoot movie for years. According to Moneymaker, there are also rumors that Animal Planet acquired rights to Willow Creek and may broadcast the hour-long movie.

Bobcat Goldthwait Gets Bigfoot Tattoo Based on His Movie Poster

In a recent interview by OC Weekly. Bobcat talks about directing the critically acclaimed and bigfoot community approved Willow Creek. 

Fans, you know we have been hinting at Bobcat's Bigfoot movie for years. In this new interview he talks about screening his Bigfoot comedy/suspense movie at different film festival, his belief in Bigfoot and the inspiration for his new tattoo. Below is the interview with just the Bigfoot parts:

So last time I saw you in Brea you were showing me a trailer for your new movie "Willow Creek" and it's out now right?

Yeah! I've been all around the world at all of those genre film festivals with it. Now it'll come out in the U.S. sometime in the spring.

I've been reading good things about it, how do you think it's doing?

It's been really fun. When I go to the more prestigious film festivals, I'm the dirt bag that got into Sundance. But when I go to other festivals, I'm prestigious. So I've been really living it up! [Laughs.]

OK so I know the movie is about Bigfoot but can you break it down a little?

It's a horror and suspense movie but there are laughs in the first half of it also. I follow this couple around who is making a real cheap kind of documentary on the town of Willow Creek, which is the town that had footage shot in back in 1967. A lot of the actual people from the town are in the movie too. The couple in the movie is Alexie Gilmore and Bryce Johnson. They've been in some of my other movies and they're really good actors. I think a lot of people think that they're a couple in real life and I think that'll separate it too. Often in a lot of "found footage" films, the actors aren't very good or you don't relate to them as people. I think in a horror movie, since it's a lot scarier, you actually care about the people more when terrible things are happening to them. [Laughs.] Usually in horror films they have people who are disgusting so that when they die, you don't feel too bad. I did it the other way around in hopes that people will care.

I saw on Instagram that you got a Bigfoot tattoo. I assume you are a believer?

Oh yeah, that's the poster for the movie done by Alex Pardee that I got. And I say I'm a believer, and then people have a problem with it because I'm an Atheist. But I always answer that with, I know people that have seen Bigfoot and that's a lot different than God! [Laughs.]

Bobcat on Bigfoot and Willow Creek

Bobcat Goldthwait understands what Bigfooting is all about.

Recently while promoting his stand-up performance for this weekend (Friday, Aug. 16, and Saturday, Aug. 17, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.) at the Liquid Lounge in Boise, ID, Bobcat Golthwait talked about his recent found footage Bigfoot movie Willow Creek.

[Bobcat's] latest, Willow Creek, is currently making film festival rounds and is probably his biggest step in a different direction--not only from his early stand-up, but from the canon of his film creations: Willow Creek is a found-footage film about Bigfoot. And although it is not without humor, Willow Creek, is definitely a horror movie.

"It's a scary movie. It's a departure from my other movies. There's comedy in the beginning but then it goes pretty straight-up horror," Goldthwait told Boise Weekly.

Willow Creek, which was shot on location, is about a couple who hikes into the remote woods near the small hamlet of Willow Creek, Calif., searching for the site of the famous Patterson/Gimlin footage--the few seconds of grainy film showing a giant, hairy man-like creature walking through the trees.

Comparisons to Blair Witch Project are inevitable. Found-footage is a well-trod genre and Goldthwait's film contains the standard ingredients: young people, scary place, mythical creature. Goldthwait said he knows the found-footage format is kind of played out, but his take on it is different.

"I only have 67 edits in this movie," Goldthwait said. "Usually you have 1,200-1,400 in a movie, but I wanted it to feel like they really were just turning the camera on and off."

Goldthwait also included something he felt was missing from other movies in the genre.

"I think sometimes in found-footage movies, they don't concentrate too much on the chemistry of the [characters]. And that was really important to me--that you believe these are real people," he said.

That authenticity was important to Goldthwait, which might be an odd thing to consider in the context of Bigfoot, but makes perfect sense considering Goldthwait's longtime love of the legend.

"I took a Bigfoot vacation," Goldthwait said, with no trace of irony. "I actually put 1,400 miles on my car just driving around to all the famous Bigfoot sites in California. And when I got to [the community of] Willow Creek, I was kind of thinking of a different movie. But when I got to WIllow Creek, this just seemed to be the movie to make because of the people I met there. And I found the town very interesting.

"The other thing was, I always wanted to try my hand at a suspense movie. I'm always jealous when I watch a Tarantino movie and you're at the edge of your seat most of the time and there's nothing going on. I'm like, 'How do you do that? How do you make suspenseful stuff?' That was my goal."

Reviews of Willow Creek would indicate Goldthwait achieved his goal.

Indiewire.com called it "the monster movie of the summer," adding that the film is "a unique representation of the tension between those who scoff at the Bigfoot legend and others willing to accept the mythology as gospel."

Fearnet.com said Goldthwait's film "is a refreshingly matter-of-fact horror/thriller ... a calm, cool, creepy little winner."

While Goldthwait has no plans to retire from stand-up, it's anyone's guess what Willow Creek may mean for his career. Regardless of what happens, he has a new subject to mine for stand-up material and, in making the film, Goldthwait learned something about himself.

"[The vacation] was a gift to the 8-year-old me," Goldthwait said. " I've always been fascinated by [Bigfoot] and what it represents and how it shows up over and over again in so many different cultures. And it took me a while to realize it, but I like the outdoors. If you go looking for Bigfoot and you don't find him, the byproduct is you went camping."

As a fan of Bobcat Goldthwait, I have never heard an interview where Bobcat seemed so comfortable and willing to take to give long thoughtful answers to questions. Ro deserves a lot of credit for providing Bobcat the time and venue for this gem of an interview.

Bobcat has been teasing about a Bigfoot movie since at least 2009. (Read: Bobcat Goldthwait Spends 3 Days Looking for Bigfoot). According to Dread Central the movie is complete and in the can. It seems the Bigfoot genre of filmaking will continue to be tied to the found footage format.

The next film in the found footage sub-genre pertaining to Bigfoot is coming at us via comedian turned filmmaker Bobcat Goldthwait, and we've got the early details on this latest sliver of Sasquatchploitation right here. Dig it!

Bleeding Cool is reporting that Goldthwait has shot and completed his next movie entitled Willow Creek, and it is a cinéma vérité-style flick about Bigfoot. Not the truck either because that would be just weird. We're talking the big hairy guy who's lived in various forms of myth and legend now for decades.

The site adds that this project isn’t a schlocky horror picture and that Goldthwait has apparently mixed satire with some suspense, and overall his film is apparently rather driven by “exploring the idea of bearing witness.” They go on to report that there are various characters in the film who believe they’ve seen the elusive Sasquatch and give differing accounts, going so far as to even fight over them. This is not the first time Bobcat has gone on record with his fascination with Bigfoot. While promoting his movie World's Greatest Dad, during an 2009 interview for atnzone.com, he waxes poetically about the philosophy of bigfoot.

Yeah! But that kind of (snaps fingers). I want to set it in the Bigfoot community, because as I was poking around there, the Bigfoot people all think they have the right version of Bigfoot. Some of them have seen it, others are ripping them off and they all fight. And I just thought it was a good way to examine faith without it being a parody of Christianity, because that has been done and is always very cartoony. So I thought about using Bigfoot as God, and I want to make it in a screwball kind of way. It’s just an idea.

Around the same time (2009) promoting the same movie, Bobcat is interviewed on a website called Groucho Reviews. Again he talks about the faith of Bigfoot.

"Oh, you know, I’ve always wanted to write a movie about Bigfoot," because I wanted to do a satire on faith, and I didn’t want to set it in the world of churches and stuff—just ‘cause the people who believe in Bigfoot all fight amongst each other really hard. So maybe someday I’ll make "His Girl Bigfoot."

It is clear that Bobcat Goldwait has had Bigfoot on the mind since at least 2009 and the intrigue still gets to him to this day. Bob, if your reading this, we think your a fantastic director/comedian and you should let us take you out to the woods.

Bobcat Goldthwait Talks about Bigfoot and Religion

In a recent interview by www.mywesttexas.com Bobcat was driving through willow creek after spending three days looking for Bigfoot. below is an excerpt of the Bigfoot part of the interview.

During the interview, Goldthwait was driving through Eureka, Calif., on his way back from Willow Creek, which is "kind of the Roswell of the Bigfoot community. I'm coming back from looking for Bigfoot."

No success in the search but Goldthwait said, "I did meet some interesting people."

Today he described his life as "Pretty good.

"I really enjoy making movies (especially those he's not in). You are talking to a guy who just spent three days in the week looking for Bigfoot. I don't take my time on the planet for granted and go out of my way to look for the fun things to do."
