WeirdThings.com talks Bigfoot, Mormons, and Cain

Justin Robert Young and Andrew Mayne from the website and podcast WeirdThings.com

"...is Sasquatch really a biblical figure doomed to walk the earth for eternity?" --WeirdThings.com

We have covered the Bigfoot/Cain Theory in detail. We even have a response from Jeff Meldrum.

The theory was posited by Matt Bowman. Bowman found an an 1835 letter where David W. Patten, an early leader in the Latter Day Saint movement, describes his encounter with Cain; the description of Cain however was a hairy man of ill smell, who claimed to be none other than Cain himself. Yes, the creature talked.

This brings us to the fellas at WeirdThings.com. They are a couple of hilarious guys who talk about, believe it or not, weird things.

On their site they are self described as:

Weird Things is a blog dedicated to people who love both science and are fascinated by the impossible and fantastic. It’s for people who believe a mystery is interesting no matter the outcome.

Our goal is to bring our readers interesting content on a daily basis; consisting of original features and links worth looking at.

What we enjoy most about WeirdThings.com is the guys don't take themselves or topics to seriously. Its a perfect mix of entertainment and quality broadcasting. You will know what we mean when you hear that Bigfoot/Cain is the anti-Hulk theory. WeirdThings.com is a blog worth reading and their podcast is worth subscribing too.

Below, with their permission, is a 7 minute excerpt of the Bigfoot/Cain/Mormon discussion.

Bigfoot: Descendant of Cain

I have heard many theories regarding Bigfoot. Missing Link. Undiscovered North-American ape. Living modern branch of Gigantopithicus. Inter-dimensional time traveling monster summoned from the physics experiments during the US Government funded Montauk Project. Really, I'm a fan of all of these and thought I had heard all of these. Not True.

Enter Matt Bowman. You may remember him from a previous post Is Bigfoot My Brothers Keeper? He wrote a paper published by the JOURNAL OF MORMON HISTORY VOLUME 33, NO. 3 FALL 2007. It is an article entitled A Mormon Bigfoot: David Patten’s Cain and the Concept of Evil in LDS Folklore.

I will give you the Readers Digest version. Multiple historical Mormon documents reference an Bigfoot-like encounter experienced by David W. Patten. Patten was an early leader in the Latter Day Saint movement and an original member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The creature is described as a hairy man of ill smell, who claimed to be none other than Cain himself. Yes, the creature talked.

Why am I bringing this up again? Because, I was a little disappointed after reading Matt Bowman's Paper. I realized there is no mention of one of the most respected BF scientists out there, Jeff Meldrum. Why would/should have Matt Bowman mentioned Jeff Meldrum? Jeff Meldrum is a BYU Alumni AND Author of the Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science. A book recognized and recommended by Jane Goodall, in fact she is quoted on the cover, "...[Sasquatch:LMS] brings a much needed level of scientific analysis to the Sasquatch-or Bigfoot-debate."

Being ever diligent I have corresponded with both Matt Bowman and Jeff Meldrum. I should first say both are very gracious and kind. Although I must say Mr.Meldrum shattered my own private personal Bigfoot hypothesis, but that's another post altogether.

First Mr.Meldrum's response to the Cain/Bigfoot Paper:
I am aware of the primary citations, but haven't encountered Bowman's paper...I don't place any significance in Patten's "experience" for Sasquatch research, but would be interested to learn more about its historical context.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Jeff Meldrum

Your welcome Jeff, I had a hunch as a Mormon you may have heard of David W. Patten and as a published well-recognized and respected Sasquatch researcher you may also have had something to say about the whole thing.

Matt Bowman's response?
In retrospect probably should have included something about Meldrum in the paper; I was aware of him when I did the research, but just didn't find a good place to fit him in. I've seen some of his work but have never spoken to him personally, so I'm not sure what drives his interest.

Overall, though, I'd say he fits in with the trend among Mormons I describe in the paper away from a more supernatural interpretation of Bigfoot and toward an increasingly scientific approach.

Best,
MB

So there you have it mystery solved.

IS BIGFOOT MY BROTHER'S KEEPER?

DISCLAIMER: Although I do not subscribe to this belief, I believe it is noteworthy as Bigfoot Lore.
There is several pieces of Mormon literature claiming that Bigfoot is a modern incarnation of Cain, the brother and murderer of Abel, from the Bible story of Genesis.
Here's a Cain/Abel refresher in case you haven't been attending Sunday school.
The first children of Adam and Eve, born after the Fall of Man. Once, when they were grown men, both Cain and Abel offered sacrifices to God. When Cain saw that Abel's pleased God whereas his did not, Cain murdered his brother out of jealousy. For his crime, Cain was exiled by God to a life of wandering in a distant land.

Most recently the BF/Cain connection was a research paper written by Matt Bowman and published in Journal of Mormon History. The paper is based on several sources including David Patten’s story of encountering Cain, a letter published in Lycurgus Wilson’s biography of Patten, Spencer Kimball's Miracle of Forgiveness, a poem referencing the event by Eliza R. Snow, and meeting records of Quorum of the 12. The biggest contribution to the lore Mr. Bowman provides is evidence the story was widely circulated in the 19th century.

The paper goes on and cites Church Archives I finding similar stories; such as a page marked “from the papers of E. Wesley Smith,” mission president in Hawaii in the 1920s and brother of Joseph Fielding Smith, describing Wesley’s meeting with Cain, and explaining that his brother told him of David Patten’s encounter.

Here is a direct quote from Lycurgus Wilson’s biography of Patten:

"As I was riding along the road on my mule I suddenly noticed a very strange personage walking beside me.... His head was about even with my shoulders as I sat in my saddle. He wore no clothing, but was covered with hair. His skin was very dark.
I asked him where he dwelt and he replied that he had no home, that he was a wanderer in the earth and traveled to and fro. He said he was a very miserable creature, that he had earnestly sought death during his sojourn upon the earth, but that he could not die, and his mission was to destroy the souls of men.
About the time he expressed himself thus, I rebuked him in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by virtue of the Holy Priesthood, and commanded him to go hence, and he immediately departed out of my sight...."(Lycurgus A. Wilson, Life of David W. Patten [Salt Lake City: Deseret News, 1900], p. 50., as quoted by Spencer W. Kimball, The Miracle of Forgiveness [Salt Lake City, Bookcraft, Inc.]18th printing 1991 p.p. 127-128.)

Another recent publishing of this connection is a fictional book that uses the Folklore as a jumping point. The book is title Clan of Cain by Shane Lester. It uses the same David W. Patten experience and then continues as a fictional adventure. Here is his book as described by him

Clan of Cain: The Genesis of Bigfoot is a newly published book that offers a different dimension to the Bigfoot mystery. A recently uncovered document reveals a possible connection between the origins of the Mormon Church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) and Bigfoot. Searching through the archives of historical church documents the author; Shane Lester uncovered an extraordinary story that becomes the foundation of a new theory about the origins of Bigfoot.

There are a few more sensational press Bigfoot has recieved lately, which I will be posting in the next few days. Then I will get back to more serious stuff. Stay tuned for Bigfoot Endorses Clinton, and NASA:BIGFOOT IS A MARTIAN!
