History of the Blobsquatch; Bigfoot's Blurry Cousin

Blobsquatch is a term Bigfooters use to declare an alleged Bigfoot photo too blurry to determine anything. Yes, we Bigfooters can be skeptical, and often are.

The Blobsquatch has sometimes done more harm than good to Bigfoot research. Many "outsiders" may not know that we scrutinize photos carefully. Every picture is peer reviewed at conferences, forums and symposiums.

So here's a light hearted effort to show we know the differences between a Blobsquatch and a Bigfoot. So I will not be talking about Bigfoot today. Today, we will expose the not-so-real history of the Blobsquatch.

I can only imagine how well the first depictions of sasquatch went over with the rest of the early humans. Its hard enough to render buffalo on a cave wall, but an upright bipedal hominid that is hairier than you?

Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random image being perceived as significant. Common examples include seeing Jesus Christ in a tortilla or Mother Teresa Muffin. Some would say people see these things because they are disparate to see these things. I would love to see Bigfoot, but I doubt I will ever see him due to Pareidolia.

Here's a more "scientific" take; the subconscious. Freudian fill-in-the-blanks. The Rorschach inkblot test is a psychological test in which subjects' perceptions of inkblots are recorded and then analyzed using psychological interpretation. This could be a source for Blobsquatch.

Finally, below are some great tips to photograph your own Blobsquatch. Believe it or not there can be a real technique to it, and many common aspects to all Blobsquatch photos.



All kidding aside, we know the best evidence of Bigfoot would be to capture one (preferably alive, but that's a debate for another post). Although we would love to have a clean clear photo of Bigfoot, we consider other forms of evidence more significant. These other forms of evidence include, tracks, casts, scat, personal encounters, and even indegenous oral myths. We rely on all of these things, and more, to one day discover and find that elusive beast we know as Bigfoot.

Jeff Meldrum talks Bigfoot on Today Show

Dr. Jeff Meldrum, who will be speaking at the BLC sponsored Oregon Sasquatch Symposium talks Bigfoot on the Today Show.

Dr. Meldrum has published several academic papers ranging from vertebrate evolutionary morphology, the emergence of bipedal locomotion in modern humans and Sasquatch and is a co-editor of a series of books on paleontology. Meldrum is the author of the 2006 book Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science (ISBN 0-7653-1216-6), a companion volume to the Discovery Channel documentary of the same name.

Arriving late to the Minnesota Bigfoot Party

"You spent two weeks on a the 911 call from San Antonio and not even a mention of the Minnesota Bigfoot trailcam photo?" This is the response we have been getting last week and until today we have not responded. Let me explain--no not enough time, let me sum up.

First we apologize, after all it is news. Second we assumed the photo spoke for itself. It appears this story has legs and fans want us to do an analysis treatment like we did for the Georgian Hoax and The Dauphin County Photo. Without further ado, here is our analysis of the Minnesota Bigfoot trailcam photo.

For those who don't know. The photos below of an alleged Bigfoot was taken taken at 7:20 pm, on October 24, 2009, on a rainy night, by a game trail camera in woods north of Remer, Minnesota, according to the self-proclaimed, skeptical hunters who set up the camera.

This is the original, enlarged at a higher density, but otherwise untouched.



First we tried to inverse colors, as opposed to inverse contrast. Inverse contrast can sometimes reveal anomalies, but in a case like this, in which the blobsquatch is almost uniform in shade, we can get better results inversing color. The first thing we noticed was the green hand/glove. Anything in the pic that is green, was either orange before the color inversion or reflecting the orange ambient color created by the flash. Since the hand wasn't orange in the original, we can assume it was reflecting the ambient light, unseen to the naked eye. Skin, even if its black absorbs light, here, almost no light penetrates the hand/glove. The surface of the hand/glove would have to be extremely smooth to produce this effect.


More revealing to us though is how the "skin" seems to hang, wrinkle and sag. Unlike the Bigfoot in the Patterson/Gimlin, this one seems to need a tailor. If you are wearing pants and look at back of your leg while bending your knee, you'll notice a eye/almond shape produced by the fabric bunching up above and below the back of your knee. This occurs in when you bend at your elbow too. These very specific "eye" shapes can be seen in the photo above. The left leg tapers to evenly, like a pair of slacks without any revealing musculature. Finally their is an undeniable baggy sagging and in the butt region.

Hopefully it puts this one to rest.
