Dead Central's Exclusive with Exists Director Eduardo Sanchez

Poster for the found footage Exists movie

Exist is described as, “Five friends on a camping weekend in the remote woods of East Texas struggle to survive against a legendary predator that is stronger, smarter, and more terrifying than anything they would have ever believed exists.”

Since 2011 we have been following the latest latest bigfoot news regarding this found footage film. Initially we announced the Exists cast and the actor inside the Bigfoot costume, followed by Sanchez explaining the Exists trilogy, some Exists production footage and finished off with a great interview with with Sanchez prior to the screening at the SXSW 2014 film festival.

Just in time to promote the new DVD + Digital release of Exists, Eduardo Sanchez talks with Dead Central about some of his thoughts behind the movie. below are a few of our favorite excerpts.

Mr. Sanchez talks about showing the bigfoot:
“This is a monster movie, and for a monster movie to work, you need to show the monster. Even Jaws, which I think is one of the best monster movies ever made… everybody always talks about how you slowly reveal the shark, but by the end of Jaws, Spielberg showed the shark, man. I came out of that theater thinking to myself, ‘Man, I just saw a great white battle these guys!’ That’s what I wanted to do with Bigfoot. There have been a lot of Bigfoot movies before mine, but few of them have really convincing creatures. In fact, some of them don’t really show the creature at all. When you don’t show the creature, you’re kind of cheating the audience out of seeing what they’re there to see. I’m there to see the monster! To see how it moves! To see the monster action! I’ve never been 100% satisfied with anything that I’ve ever seen.”
...and about the look of the bigfoot:
“I’ve been studying the idea of how to make this film since I was a kid, ya know? I remember watching ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’ and always critiquing that suit! The feet were all wrong! Even as a kid I was like, ‘Why did they make the feet like that? It looks like he’s wearing flesh shoes!’ So from a very early age I was trying to figure out how to do this, and I remember seeing Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan. Rick Baker did the ape effects for that film, and I’ve always used that as an example of how to do it right. When you look at those apes… man, they look really authentic. It’s not just the suit though; it’s the way that they’re lit, the way that they’re shot, etc. When it came time to make Exists, I knew what I wanted and, more importantly, what I didn’t want. When I saw the suit and especially when I saw Brian [Steele] in the suit, even as someone who helped design the look of the creature, I was blown away. It totally worked. This didn’t look like a human in a suit. This looked like a creature. From there it was all a matter of saying, ‘Okay, what’s the best way to show this off but not completely over-expose it?”

Eduardo Sanchez: Exists is like a feature length Patterson-Gimlin film

Promo Pic for Eduardo Sanchez's Exists
"Not a comedic Bigfoot. Not a fake-looking, CG Bigfoot. Not an alien Bigfoot with super human abilities - just the creature I loved - a feature-length PATTERSON-GIMLIN film." --Eduardo Sanchez on the type of Bigfoot he wanted in his movie

Exists, by director Eduardo Sanchez, is the Bigfoot movie that the film community has been waiting for. It will be screened at this years SXSW 2014 Film festival in March during the coveted midnight showing. Drew McWeeny from HitFix says, "When I attend Toronto, Sundance, and SXSW each year, one of the things I specifically focus on is the midnight programming."

In Drew McWeeny's HitFix article, he continues to mention how he looks forward to the screening of Exists, "Another familiar name. Eduardo Sanchez is, of course, best known as the co-creator of "The Blair Witch Project," but I think he's made a strong showing in the last few years. "Lovely Molly" is a film that really stuck with me, and I think he's got a great sense of creepy these days, plus he's constantly thinking about the role technology plays, not only in how we tell these stories, but in which stories we tell. Plus it sounds like this is a Bigfoot movie, and that's fine by me."

On the SXSW website Eduardo Sanchex is interviewed regarding his movie.

Tell us a little about your film.
I've been obsessed with Bigfoot ever since I saw the Patterson-Gimlin film as a kid. It was the SCARIEST thing I had ever experienced. It fascinated me and took over my world.
Since then, I've wanted to make a movie about the big guy...
But a movie where Bigfoot felt scary and REAL - like the Bigfoot that I experienced all those years ago. Not a comedic Bigfoot. Not a fake-looking, CG Bigfoot. Not an alien Bigfoot with super human abilities - just the creature I loved - a feature-length PATTERSON-GIMLIN film.
Exists is the Bigfoot movie I've been waiting to see.

Why did you start making films?
I saw Star Wars and that was it - I wanted to make films. But I didn't really take it seriously until high school, where I took a TV production in 11th grade that changed my life.
I still remember the moment: first day of class - first few sentences that came out of Mr. Baron's mouth about careers in television and film...
I knew what I was going to do.
Or at least try to do...

Have you been to SXSW before? Any tips?
Yes - I was at SXSW for Lovely Molly in 2012 and VHS2 in 2013.
Tips - figure out how not to drive into the downtown area during the day - it's tough love.
Most looking forward to - the filmmaker's lunch that Robert Rodriguez hosts every year...and the BBQ.

Tell us a random fact (or two!) that would help our attendees get a better idea of who you are.
I am probably the tallest Cuban-American filmmaker at this year's festival.

Official Synopsis of Exists:
When brothers Brian and Matt Tover secretly sneak out to their Uncle's long abandoned cabin in East Texas for a party weekend with their friends, they find themselves stalked by the legendary Sasquatch.

Cut off from the world, and knowing help isn’t coming, the kids must try to make it out of the woods alive while hunted by a creature that’s smarter, stronger, and more terrifying than they would have ever believed exists.

"Blair Witch" Director Talks About His New Bigfoot Trilogy

"Blair Witch" Director Eduardo Sanchez Talks Bigfoot
“The film is the first in a trilogy exploring and reinventing the Bigfoot myth,” Sanchez said. “We all remember the terror of watching such classics as ‘The Legend of Boggy Creek,’ and I look forward to making Bigfoot scary again.” -- Eduardo Sanchez

Another Sasquatchploitation movie. (Read our top 51 Sasquatchploitation movies) Except this one has a big budget behind. Not only does it have a familiar director, Eduardo Sanchez from "Blair Witch" fame, it will star creature celebrity Brian Steele as Bigfoot whom will be costumed and designed by WETA workshop, famous for Lord of the Rings, King Kong, and Avatar.

Below is  short excerpt from an interview from Collider.com

SANCHEZ: I just wrapped a movie. I never really say this about any of my movies when I wrap because you just never know, but I think this next movie is going to be big. It’s a Bigfoot movie, and I’ve been trying to make a Bigfoot movie since I was 16 years old. This is the third Bigfoot script that I’ve been involved with and helped write. It’s called Exists, and we just wrapped in Austin, Texas. I’ve tried to do some Bigfoot movies with the studios, and the studios were always very hesitant because nobody knows if Bigfoot stuff will work. Part of what makes it fun is the idea of, “Is this going to work?” But, one of our assistant editors cut a quick trailer for it, as we were shooting it, and it looks really, really great. It seems like I may have made the film that I’ve been waiting to watch, since I was a teenager. Who the hell knows, if it will be any good at all, but right now, I’m feeling really optimistic about it. I’m really excited about it.

Do you know what you’ll be doing after that?

SANCHEZ: I don’t know. I’m going to take the summer off and maybe write a little bit, and then I have some other scripts that I’m working on. Right now, I’m working on the post for the Bigfoot movie, and then I’ll see what happens after that.

Is Exists done with found footage?

SANCHEZ: Yes, it’s actually the first found footage movie that I’ve done since Blair Witch. It’s totally found footage. I was going to use a similar technique to Lovely Molly, where I mixed them, but the closer I got to shooting it, it just started making more sense to do it the other way. Everything that I’ve seen Bigfoot in is all found footage. It’s always people with a video camera or a film camera, capturing him, so that seemed to be the right way to film the movie. I’m very happy I did it because it helped us out with production and it also gives it a real creepy vibe that would have been hard to get, if I had shot it normally. I’m happy with it. We spent a lot of money on the suit. WETA, the guys who did The Lord of the Rings, designed the suit, and Spectral Motion, who are Academy Award nominated effects guys, built the suit. Brian Steele was the guy in the suit, and he’s a famous creature guy. It was pretty amazing. I also really enjoyed shooting in Texas. I’m looking forward to that. I haven’t looked forward to one of my movies this much in a long time, probably since film school., so I’m pretty excited about it. You never know what you have, but it feels like we have something special, so I’m hoping and keeping my fingers crossed.
